We had the pleasure of sending Kevin Harrison, one of our Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) consumer advocates, to attend Boehringer Ingelheim Pulmonary Fibrosis Patient Advisory Board in Germany, where he represented our PF community and Lung Foundation Australia. Kevin was joined by his partner and carer, Jeanette, and together they described it as an “incredible opportunity” to learn, connect, and share stories with other consumers from patient organisations around the world in the PF space. They even brought a touch of Australia, handing out koala pins to attendees—a big hit! 🐨

Today marks the beginning of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a critical time for us at Lung Foundation Australia as we launch our Shine a Light on Lung Cancer campaign. Lung cancer remains the deadliest cancer in Australia, with the highest mortality rate among all cancers. Tragically, only 26% of lung cancer patients reach the five-year survival mark, largely because the disease is often diagnosed too late. Astonishingly, 18% of individuals diagnosed with lung cancer experience no symptoms beforehand, and many have no history of smoking. It's crucial to understand that lung cancer does not discriminate based on past smoking history. People diagnosed who have smoked deserve the same compassion, treatment, and care as anyone else with this disease. Cancer should carry no stigma; it is a disease, not a judgment. Investing in more support and research can make a profound difference. Early diagnosis of lung cancer at stage 1 can increase the survival rate to nearly 70%. Queenslanders aged 50-80 who want to quit smoking can access free nicotine replacement therapies and potentially life-saving lung cancer screening by participating in a new study. Led by Associate Professor Henry Marshall from The University of Queensland’s Thoracic Research Centre, the “Max Up” study aims to reduce the risk of lung cancer deaths by combining smoking cessation and screening.
