One of our members, Woollahra Municipal Council, has demonstrated an impressive main street revitalisation and activation win through its Rose Bay Centre Connectivity Program! Woollahra Municipal Council is located on the southern edge of Sydney Harbour in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. In 2023, Council trialled temporary activations in the Rose Bay Centre, which is a key local centre focused around New South Head Road along the South Head peninsula. The Rose Bay Centre Connectivity program was made possible by NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces Program (Round 2), receiving $480,100 (+ GST). The initiative aimed to create a more connected, pedestrian-friendly and memorable destination that people wanted to return to again and again. Council staff engaged the Curators Department and Caper Creative to work with local artists, businesses and the community to transform under-utilised spaces into attractive destinations reflecting Rose Bay’s unique identity. Through colourful murals, plantings, paintings, way-finding and lighting, Collins Laneway was upgraded to create a Mediterranean feel. Meanwhile, murals, dog-themed painted bollards and plantings by Aboriginal-owned nursery IndigiGrow around Percival Laneway & Park celebrated and enhanced the local area, and connections to the Rose Bay dog beach. Further works included a temporary pedestrian crossing, an accessible parklet, decorative lighting in Pannerong Reserve, and a large and eye catching mural by artist Claire Foxton in Wilberforce car park. Community feedback from residents and businesses was overwhelmingly positive. The general feeling was that the project made significant improvements to the local amenity, connectivity, and boosted community pride. The project helped to revitalise the area by increasing foot traffic and supporting local businesses following the impacts of COVID-19. Collins Laneway gained national and international media coverage and went viral on social media. The project also received recognition as a finalist in 2024 NSW Local Government Excellence Awards. Many of the upgrades remain today, and have seeded the vision for the Rose Bay Place Plan 2023-2028. Learn more about the program: https://lnkd.in/gFWiN_5C

Drawing inspiration from an insightful masterclass led by Steve de Niese (Creative Director of Assemblo) at the Mainstreet Australia National Conference earlier this year, here are 4 steps to creating a strong brand identity for your main street: 1️⃣ Define Your Mission and Core Values Before diving into visuals or marketing, it’s essential to establish the purpose of your main street’s brand. Ask yourself: What is your main street about? What do you want people to feel or think when they visit? Defining your mission provides a clear direction, helping you align your brand strategy with what matters most to your community and businesses. 2️⃣ Develop Visual Identity Although visual identity is only one piece of the puzzle, it’s an important one. Think about your logo, colours, fonts, and imagery—elements that should reflect your mission and values. Steve de Niese emphasised that while visual identity is crucial, it’s the brand strategy behind these visuals that should drive the design. Ensure that these elements create a cohesive and memorable impression of your main street. 3️⃣ Communicate Consistently A strong brand relies on consistent messaging across all channels—whether through signage, social media, or local campaigns. Communicate clearly and consistently to your audience, ensuring your message resonates with both visitors and local businesses. According to Steve, aligning your internal communications will also ensure your stakeholders are on the same page, allowing for more effective marketing and stronger advocacy. 4️⃣ Engage Your Stakeholders and Community Your community is your strongest advocate. Engage local businesses, residents, and visitors by turning them into active supporters of your main street’s brand. Whether through events, marketing campaigns, or partnerships, involving them in your brand’s journey ensures they feel connected to and invested in your main street’s success. #MainStreetSuccess #Brand #BrandIdentity #MainStreet #Community
