We are excited to welcome another two University of Melbourne students to live and work in the region over summer as part of our Invergowrie Program for women in science, technology, engineering and maths. This year’s internships are available at the Murray-Darling Basin Authority and Lower Murray Water Applications close 13 October 2024. One of the participants in last year’s program, Katya Shemetova, spoke to us about her time in the region and the impact it made. Find out about her experience and this year’s internship opportunities here: https://lnkd.in/gNfpNA2G

New PhD opportunities are available through the One Basin CRC, with expressions of interest closing on 10 October. The PhD program provides candidates with the professional skills and networks to accelerate their careers in research or practice across the water, agriculture or environmental sectors. The CRC’s Mildura Hub – which is housed here at MRIC – currently has two PhD candidates and a postdoctoral researcher. In our latest newsletter, we spoke to Kelsy Burns, who moved to Mildura five months ago to undertake her PhD research. Read about her experience here: https://lnkd.in/g99Esy2k

The Centre recently supported the One Basin CRC team with their annual event in Mildura. The event saw about 170 people, from 57 of the CRC’s partner organisations, come together to discuss shared challenges and strategies for the Murray–Darling Basin. Lots of regional elements were woven into the event program, helping to showcase Mildura as well as the local partners’ valuable and innovative projects. This was also our first opportunity to show stakeholders through our newly updated offices! More on that to come… Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/g8GGHKU4

A new study by our partner organisation the University of Melbourne is looking to understand why young people enter, stay or leave jobs or careers in the agri-food sector. People aged 15 to 35 who are considering a career in agri-food, are currently working in the sector, or have left, are invited to share their experiences by participating in a 10–15-minute survey and/or interview. The research will be used to inform policies and programs, including at a regional level, amongst education providers and employers, as well as industry. It was great to support another STEM Idols event, which this year was all about clean energy. Our CEO Rebecca Wells spoke to the year 9 students yesterday about hydrogen and the opportunities available to them. Designed to inspire the future generation of professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the event is organised by the Northern Mallee Local Learning and Employment Network (NMLLEN) in collaboration with industry and partners, including us. Read more about the opportunities Rebecca has had recently to speak about the possibilities associated with green hydrogen: https://lnkd.in/gvm395FF Pictured: NMLLEN Chair Anne Mansell closing the 2024 event.

Our CEO Rebecca Wells was in Melbourne yesterday to present about hydrogen as a decarbonisation opportunity at the Victorian Greenhouse Alliances Conference. She also visited La Trobe University to discuss opportunities for future work with some key academics, following on from their research trip to Mildura last month. The Bundoora campus is looking beautiful with the imminent arrival of spring!
