Traditional lithium mining, primarily from hard rock mining in Australia and brine evaporation in South America, is environmentally intensive, consuming significant amounts of water and energy. Analysts predict a potential lithium shortage by 2029, raising concerns about the industry’s ability to scale up responsibly. Direct Lithium Extraction offers a promising alternative, using thermal or chemical processes to extract lithium directly from brine while minimising environmental impacts. Unlike conventional methods, DLE can reinject water back into aquifers and reduce land usage, making it less invasive. Although currently a small part of the market, DLE is expected to grow significantly by 2030, attracting interest from mining and energy companies looking to develop cleaner, more efficient ways to meet the world’s increasing lithium needs.
