When we asked institutional investors if they had divested any of their positions due to ESG in the last 12-months, we thought this would highlight where the rubber hits the road on this topic. The feedback was that divestments in the listed space are predominantly driven by financial drivers and performance. #ESG factors play a limited role, with ~70% of surveyed investors stating it had not factored into their rationale for divestments. However, #governance is a key factor that does impact on divestment decisions. This apparent contradiction highlights perception issues around what the term #ESG actually means to many institutional investors. Further light was shed on this issue when institutional investors scored the areas of most importance to them in our latest research. ‘Effectiveness of the Board’ was rated as the most important ESG factor. Additionally, the feedback received highlights strongly that risk management and a company’s social license to operate are also key determinants in potential divestments of positions. This aligns with market commentary on the role of investors in good governance and aligns with an article back in 2023 from BNP Paribas (https://lnkd.in/gwDMSRyU) which stated: “Divestments can be an important tool in the transition to a more sustainable world since they send a clear signal that markets and investors no longer tolerate companies falling short on environmental, social and governance goals, a recent study has found. Pulling your money out may affect returns, but to create change and hopefully improve environmental and social issues, investment managers should both divest and engage.” What are your thoughts? The reality of changing definitions and use of the term ESG, as discussed in the #FinancialTimes video on ‘Who killed the ESG party?’, is critical to understanding the investor and broker feedback in #MarketMeter’s latest research. As stated by Stuart Kirk in the film, “Those three letters may even disappear, and we’re going to move to a much, much better place because of it.” Feedback from our research highlighted a broad response to ESG questions. Some respondents stated they don’t factor ESG into their investment decisions at all, and yet in contrast stated that good governance is a critical element to how they assess companies. The key challenge is bringing home common definitions emphasising the long-term financial sustainability impacts of ESG considerations. This would provide greater clarity on how this term should be appropriately applied, considered and discussed. Until we land on the ‘new’ terminology, we have to navigate the cross talk of differing opinions on ‘what it means’. As stated by Desiree Fixler, Former Group Sustainability Officer at DWS Group, in the FT video, “ESG is an umbrella term, and it means many different things to different people. It can be a risk management feature, how the outside, changing world might affect the company you’re investing in.
