🚨 According to the latest State of the Global Climate report by World Meteorological Organization, 2023 has been confirmed as the hottest year on record by a clear margin 📈.   Records were also once again broken for greenhouse gas levels, surface temperatures, ocean heat and acidification, sea level rise, Antarctic sea ice cover and glacier retreat.   As United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres put it: “Sirens are blaring across all major indicators.”   But while the signs of climate change are undeniable, we need to remember:   It is not too late to act. We can still keep our planet’s long-term temperature rise below 1.5 °C, and avoid the worst of climate chaos. #ClimateAction

International Women's Day last Friday was a great reminder of how amazing women are in all parts of our community. It was heartwarming to see so many men and women call out the incredible women all around us. As someone who works in disaster management, I was particularly moved by this article released by the UNDRR for International Women's Day highlighting the strong women leading with adaptability and resilience in disaster management initiatives around the world, often with limited resources. It is confronting to read women and children are 14 times more likely to die in a disaster according to UNDP. Lets work towards gender and disability inclusivity in all phases of planning, response, and recovery in Australia, whenever we can, so we are thinking of the whole community with input from the whole community. That will help, at least in Australia, to ensure the result of our planning does not end up with an unintended gender, age or disability bias or statistical imbalances. So grateful to live in Australia! #GratefulinAustralia #InternationalWomensDay #DisasterManagement #GenderInclusivity Reference : UNDP Gender and Disasters https://lnkd.in/gHTNxxTR

Building disaster resilience is crucial for all of us, especially for community members living with disabilities. According to a recent UNDRR article, only 8% of people with disabilities reported that current Disaster Risk Reduction plans address their needs. This is a significant concern that needs to be addressed as a priority Experience shows that people with disabilities and their carers are proactive in wanting to have plans in place that provide a roadmap for their needs and how they can help emergency services in times of emergency. Emergency services want to know where the people that need assistance are and what is the plan to help them. UNDRR's initiative provides a great way for all levels of government and business in Australia to understand where we stand against this international standard and how we can provide confidence to people with disabilities and a roadmap for emergency services. Together, we can make a difference and build prepared and resilient communities! Let's work towards improving our inclusion of disability needs in Disaster Risk Reduction plans. https://lnkd.in/gKV3fsuD
