A new building in Perth looks like any other in the city — a 12-storey glass edifice, testament to Perth’s ever-burgeoning economy. Dwarfed by the neighbouring BHP tower, Westralia Square Two is probably the kind of building you would walk past without thinking twice. But take note, WS2 is a game-changer. As the city’s first timber-hybrid skyscraper, it is a harbinger of change and was suitably endorsed by Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti at yesterday’s launch as the start of something new. Not only was the tower 30 per cent faster to build than one utilising traditional construction materials of concrete and steel, but the lightweight construction allowed a building that was four times the size of one achievable with a conventional structure. https://lnkd.in/g4i3QVWJ

The combination of the words "europallet" and "apartment" usually evokes furniture constructed in the spirit of DIY, or possibly moving logistics. The Dutch construction industry has a chance to change those associations. Urban Climate Architects and developer The Urban Woods will develop a 10-story high-rise with 102 apartments inside in Delphi. If you’re designing a mass timber school in Michigan, the approvals process has recently become more straightforward. The State has updated an old statute—Act 306 of 1937—that some building code officials had interpreted as in conflict with the Michigan Building Code (MBC) when it comes to mass timber in schools. The old version of the code specified only the use of “fire resisting materials”—including steel and concrete, but not wood—for school construction. Michigan enacted the out-of-date statute at a time before the commercialization of mass timber materials like cross-laminated timber and glulam, which research has since proven have excellent fire resistance properties (Large-Scale Fire Tests of A Mass Timber Building Structure for MTDFTP & Fire Safe implementation of visible mass timber in tall buildings – compartment fire testing). https://lnkd.in/eCXq_5h3

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, councillors approved the zoning application for the first mass timber building on a city-owned site, marking the final stage of approvals from the City before construction can begin. To be located at 1113-1117 Dundas Street West, the 10-storey building will be a part of the City’s Mass Timber Pilot Program, which aims to assess the feasibility of delivering affordable rental housing within a mass timber form in order to provide needed housing while reducing carbon emissions. Two other mass timber projects, including a 12-storey project on Danforth Avenue and an 18-storey building on Queens Wharf, are also in the planning stages. https://lnkd.in/gabPpMWH
