🔥 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 🔥
Last Friday, the incredible Kim Teo (CEO me&u), took the stage with Frances Goh for a fireside chat at our sold-out event! They explored her journey of raising capital (including Mr Yum’s $89M Series A 😮 ), merging with me&u, and leading as a female CEO in a male-dominated industry.
💡 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀:
⚡ 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: A strong sales or product background (ideally both) can significantly improve your chances of leading a startup.
🤫 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Pausing to breathe in conversations is often more impactful than filling the silence.
💰 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹: Be prepared. An up-to-date data room and creating FOMO can be game-changers.
Afterward, we broke out into 6 groups led by founders and investors, sharing their growth stories and advising on different ways to access capital. Tracey Warren, Rani Heraputeri, Jodie Imam, Sheree Andersen, Nikki Tugano, and Vandana Chaudhry, THANK YOU 🙏
Incredible to be hosting this event together with One Roof, Think & Grow, and Mayfly Ventures. And Vicky K., amazing what a coffee and shared frustration can lead to 😉 ..
100 coffees challenge with my office compatriot Alan Crabbe, founder of Frontcover.
Built for communities, Frontcover keeps members engaged with visual updates, important links, announcements and special benefits - all in one place.
After founding two successful Fintech companies, pozible and Birchal, I asked Alan what inspired his shift towards community tooling.
He shared two powerful events he witnessed that revealed to him the incredible impact of community.
Save the Tote’s pozible campaign: When the iconic Tote Hotel in Collingwood was at risk of closing due to financial pressures, the local community rallied. Over 12,000 live music supporters through Pozible, raising $3.1M and ultimately saving the Tote.
Zero Co’s Birchal campaign: In 2021 Zero Co raised over $5 million in just a few hours through a community of over 3000 eco-conscious ambassadors and supporters on Birchal, setting a record as one of the fastest and most successful crowdfunding efforts globally.
From this Alan started ideating how Front Cover can enable community managers to:
• keep community members engaged with up-to-date visuals + direct comms
• deliver member benefits and brand collabs
• issue digital membership through Apple and Google wallet

🎵 Meet me at the Startup Sips 🎵
Startup Sips was already ffun, but add in Linktree's space and I think we might've nailed it.
For those who haven't been to Startup Sips before, these drinks were the kicked off by Mayfly Ventures as a means to strengthen our community. When invited to help bring this to life with Aussie Founders Club, it was a no brainer to get involved.
Our goal, to create an event where founders can get together - no strings attached, have a drink with likeminded founders, and connect with a new friend, partner, cofounder.
Today, post Friday's event, I checked my LinkedIn messages to find this message:

Also, how cool is this video Mark Renzo Mariveles captured of the event and its community on Friday. I love the diversity of the community in age, background, and industry. In case you want to come next time, make sure you follow the Aussie Founders Club Luma calendar.

Had a great chat with Pip Stocks, founder of BrandHook, a successful agency that has been helping businesses connect with their customers for 18+ years. She also founded the funded tech startup Hearsay. After some lessons learned, she’s now fully focused on Brandhook, which she pivoted from being enterprise-focused to startup-founder-focused.

Pip has a great online course on customer-centricity and is launching an in-person mini-accelerator soon. Follow her for updates on this!
Iced lattes and soaking up the sun on the Antler Rooftop with Rani Heraputeri for the 100 coffees challenge.
From the start of her tech career, Rani has been driven by a mission: closing the funding gap for women in tech. Her journey began at WeWork in Jakarta, where she first encountered the startup ecosystem and the gender disparity in funding.
This passion led her to be a founding employee at Asia's first gender-lens investment firm, Teja Ventures, and She Loves Tech.
Since moving to Australia and joining Antler, Rani has continued to be a fierce advocate for gender equity in tech. Antler is committed to invest in more women founders and to shape the gender mix of founders at the very top-of-the-funnel in the ecosystem. Currently, women-led startups make up at least 37% of their first fund investments in Australia.
This Friday, Rani will be featured as a thought leader at the Women Scaling Startups event, co-hosted by One Roof, Mayfly Ventures, and Think & Grow, and featuring Kim Teo.
Next week, Antler is putting on a panel featuring some of the female founders.
Antler is also accepting applications for their next cohort.
Links to all in comments.
Last week Mayfly Ventures was invited to run our 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 workshop for the Melbourne Accelerator Program (MAP). We explored how to launch well-validated MVPs cost-effectively and time-efficiently.
I can tell you, there are some really exciting ideas coming to life, from new types of sun protection to advanced prosthesis creation, and money management for Gen X.
Thanks Katrina Gaskin and Marina Chelak for having us!
If you are at the earliest stage of launching your startup, I highly recommend checking out MAP's Velocity pre-accelerator program.
Looking forward to the next session 🫶

We’re gearing up for the last Startup Sips of the year, and it’s set to be a good one. You in?
When we (Mayfly Ventures & Aussie Founders Club) first launched Startup Sips, we were a bit ambitious (and maybe a little naive), thinking we could run a monthly event on top of everything else we had going on. While the first couple of events were a hit, we quickly realised that pulling off a monthly event was a lot. So, the events have been more sporadic than we planned, but each one has been special.
BUT we thought it would be rude not to round out the year with one last hurrah for 2024 before these nights turn into quarterly events next year.
These are nights we genuinely love, because they’re all about real connections, fun, and the best of the startup ecosystem. You never know who you’ll meet that could change the trajectory of your journey.
𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨: You might walk away with a connection that changes everything (a cofounder, a mentor, a friend to navigate the journey with) 🔥
𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨: You've had some free drink, some food (probably pizza - who doesn't love pizza), in good company, in a beautiful space - and I can promise you this!
This time, we’re bringing the fun to Linktree’s Epic Event Space (shoutout to Linktree and David Walker for making it happen!). A huge thank you also to Mayfly Ventures and Kairos Recruitment (thank you me!) for funding the fun 🍻🍕
Date: Friday 25th October
Where: Linktree HQ (address to be provided on RSVP)
Cost: Absolutely FREE!
Head over to Luma and save your spot! See you there!
