📣 The Australian Federal Government has today awarded Australian clean tech MCi Carbon a $14.5m Carbon Capture Technologies Program (CCTP) grant 💰 The Myrtle+ Project aims to progress Australia's lead in permanent Carbon Capture & Utilisation (CCU) technology. It will capture and transform CO₂ from hard-to-abate industries into carbon embodied materials for use in buildings and construction, creating new industries and jobs in the circular carbon economy. The fund will progress plant upgrades to MCi Carbon’s Myrtle CCU facility to expand and optimise processing capabilities for a broader range of feedstock materials, further supporting decarbonisation efforts. 🏗 Myrtle, which is currently in late-stage construction on Kooragang Island in Newcastle, will capture and transform more than 1000 tonnes of CO₂ per year and create up to 5,000 tonnes of new materials. The project brings MCi Carbon’s CCU technology closer to market, significantly advancing both Australian and global customer engagements, ultimately accelerating its mission to lock away millions of tonnes of CO₂ into materials and helping the world achieve a net zero future. Unlocking the value of carbon by transforming emissions into valuable materials for the circular economy.
About us
MCi Carbon (MCi) is a world-leading and award-winning Australian clean technology transforming carbon dioxide (CO2) into building products and materials for the circular carbon economy. Based in Canberra, MCi Carbon has a technical headquarters in Newcastle, a global reference pilot plant at the Newcastle Institute of Energy and Resources (NIER) and will soon be building one of the world's first mineral carbonation demonstration plants at Orica's Kooragang Island manufacturing site, operational in 2024. Founded in 2013, MCi’s proprietary mineral carbonation technology is a low-cost, low-pressure, low-energy chemical engineering process to transform CO2 emissions from industrial sources into solid materials for use in a range of products. MCi has received local and international recognition for its R&D, recently awarded the Circular Transition Award at the 34th National Banksia Sustainability Awards and the NSW Clean Technology Award. In 2021, MCi won first prize at the Clean Energy Start-up Pitch Battle at COP26 in Glasgow. Other global accolades include the 2018 Resource Innovator of the Year Award at the New Materials Summit in Berlin and being featured at the World Economic Forum Pioneers of Change Summit, building momentum as a global brand and a leader in carbon capture and utilisation (CCU). Recently featured in Bloomberg, Forbes, and the Australian Financial Review, MCi CEO Marcus Dawe and COO Sophia Hamblin Wang were named in the Top 100 Australian Green Power Players, published in The Australian. 🔄WATCH🌍Imagine if we could transform CO₂ emissions into valuable products instead of letting them harm our planet. At MCi Carbon, we’re doing just that with our patented CO₂ transformation technology. We treat CO₂ as a resource that can be turned into solid materials, speeding up the Earth’s natural carbon cycle from millions of years to minutes. With Myrtle in late stage construction, we’re creating a new paradigm for large-scale carbon removal — capturing emissions from industries like cement, steel, and chemicals and converting them into products for sustainable infrastructure. 🌱 By partnering with industry leaders, we’re not only reducing emissions but also enabling a profitable transition to carbon neutrality and even carbon negative solutions. Let’s rethink carbon as a resource and unlock the potential of a circular carbon economy. Want to be part of the solution? 🌍 Join MCi Carbon in the race to net zero emissions! Share our story. #CarbonCapture #ClimateAction #CircularEconomy #NetZero #Sustainability #Innovation #CO2Transformation #GreenTech #Decarbonisation #CleanEnergy

💫 2024 has marked a pivotal moment in our journey with the near completion of Myrtle, our latest mineral carbonation plant and Australia’s CCU Flagship in Newcastle, New South Wales. Once fully operational, Myrtle will capture and transform over 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually into more than 5,000 tonnes of low-carbon materials. The Myrtle+ Project will fast-track decarbonisation pathways for industries worldwide, providing our customers with a rapid validation platform for testing emissions profiles, waste streams, and low-carbon product applications. By doing so, Myrtle will help these industries embed sustainability into their operations without overhauling their entire supply chains. #mineralcarbonation #myrtle #ccu #mcicarbon Significantly, MCi Carbon received a further $14.5 million Carbon Capture Technologies Program (CCTP) grant from the Australian Government in August. The company has been continuously supported by government funding for over a decade, with 11 consecutive years of grants, representing what will be a 15-year partnership with Australian government bodies. This sustained bipartisan support reflects the confidence in our technology and the belief that Myrtle will be a cornerstone in Australia’s clean technology future. The project will also expand our plant’s capabilities, allowing us to process a broader range of feedstocks and provide decarbonization pathways for industries in Australia and around the globe. Beyond its technical capabilities, Myrtle symbolises our home-grown innovation, the belief in a circular economy, and climate hope. It serves as a beacon of what’s possible when cutting-edge technology, industry collaboration, and government support converge to address the climate crisis.

A huge thanks to Kara Sullivan (Guts Creative) for expertly moderating the panel on brand at the Hunter Innovation Festival! It was inspiring to hear from Mark Adams (Rhizocore Technologies) and Dan Canham (Tomorrow Strategy Co.) about what's working in building strong brands. At MCi Carbon, we continue refining our local narrative while sharing our story on the global stage. The Hunter region and Newcastle have an incredible history of resilience and transformation, and we’re proud to contribute to that rich legacy. Over the last 12 months, we’ve seen real progress in our brand and marketing efforts. At last year's festival, local success stories, including ours, were struggling to find the spotlight. But thanks to the boots-on-the-ground advocacy and community engagement—including partnerships with local businesses, government, and universities—we’ve come a long way! #HunterInnovationFestival #MCiCarbon #BrandBuilding #Sustainability #ClimateAction #HunterRegion #NetZero #CommunityEngagement #Innovation #CircularEconomy

Clear, rational, evidence based financial and political decision making is required to meet our climate, ESG and economic growth targets. Well done Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC) in helping tell some of the real world stories of climate action that we Australians can now hear and feel proud of in this, an unavoidable major economic and societal transition to net zero. MCi Carbon is proud to be featured in this campaign as one of these stories. Our governments need to be thinking long term in the national interest and resist political point scoring and creating policy uncertainty for those investors we actually need to fund the various paths to net zero and the new industries and jobs that are created with them. How about let's all act in the common interest of "Australia Inc." first.
Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC) Climate Action Pays Off campaign continues to roll around the national and regional media. Discussion between myself and Kieran Gilbert on Sky News Afternoon Agenda.
