In Melbourne, our land, plants, and green spaces are vital to our way of life. As a Catchment Management Authority, we deliver agricultural projects that boost food production, improve biodiversity, and promote land stewardship. Together with the Macedon Ranges Vignerons Association, Van Schaik's Bio Gro, and GrapeLinks, and with funding from Sustainability Victoria, we're working on an innovative trial using suburban green waste to mulch vineyards in the Macedon Ranges. The results so far are promising: recycled organic mulch applied under vines in spring creates the perfect conditions - moist soil, fewer weeds, and optimal soil temperatures for vine growth and grape production. This 'Goldilocks zone' is just right for producing exceptional grapes! 🍷🍇 The trial has also reduced the need for chemicals, compared to traditional methods like brush cutting, herbicides, or straw mulching. We’re proud to support the installation of a new rain gauge and digital reader at the Wallan Bowling Club! The digital reader not only allows members to easily view real-time rainfall data, but sends the data via radio signal to Melbourne Water’s virtual interactive map. This provides the public with free-to-access information on rainfall, which is updated hourly. This new rain guage is part of a network of 200 gauges and readers across the state. Senior Hydrographer Sarah Beattie says the data will help Melbourne Water to better analyse and predict rain patterns. “Understanding rainfall patterns across Melbourne helps us plan for the future and provide supporting data for Melbourne Water projects,” she said. We're pleased to share the final concept designs for the Glenroy retarding basins. Over the past year, we've been exploring ways to safely transform three retarding basins in Glenroy into valuable community spaces. These basins play a crucial role in our drainage system, collecting and holding stormwater during heavy rain. When the weather is nice, they’ll also provide grassy areas and open space for communities to enjoy. Thanks to your input, we've developed the design concepts, and with your additional feedback, we now have the final designs ready to move forward. Once a swamp, the 330 square kilometre Koo Wee Rup and Longwarry Flood Protection District, was drained in the late 1800s for farming and to this day remains an important agricultural area on the edge of Melbourne and a region of national biodiversity significance Our customers in the District know more than most that drainage is essential to their way of life. That's why we work alongside community, local councils, and authorities, to manage this drainage network, keep the water flowing and maintain the viability of this unique region. To find out more about our work in the area take a look at and FOLLOW the new online Koo Wee Rup - Longwarry Community Hub: https://lnkd.in/gutd43AB

Building near our drains? Here’s what you need to know Melbourne’s underground drainage network is like a hidden lifeline for our city, with some pipes dating back to the 1800s! Our job is to manage this intricate system, ensuring that stormwater is safely carried away from built-up areas into our rivers and creeks. But with construction happening every day, there’s always a risk of damaging these critical water, sewer, and stormwater assets, leading to costly repairs and major disruptions. If you're planning to work near Melbourne Water’s drainage network, you’ll need our written approval first. This ensures that your project doesn’t obstruct or damage the system, keeping you, the public, and nearby structures safe. At Melbourne Water, we manage a complex drainage network, including retarding basins and wetlands, to protect our rivers, creeks and bays from stormwater. However, our drainage system faces two big challenges: 1. Urbanisation: As our city grows, more concrete and roads reduce the areas that can absorb water. 2. Climate change: Severe weather is becoming more common, so our drainage system must handle more rainwater and safely move stormwater into rivers and creeks. To support our drainage system now and in the future, we're also working with our customers and communities to prepare for floods to protect our city. How can you get involved? The Waterways and Drainage charge on your water bill helps us manage our extensive drainage network. We're reviewing our services and prices for 2026 to 2031.
