  • Today, we recognise National Close the Gap Day, a movement advocating for health equality for all. It’s a time to come together, share knowledge, and take meaningful action to support better health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We had the opportunity to come together, and watch Take Heart 2025, a powerful new film in the Take Heart series. This 30-minute film sheds light on rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and calls on all Australians to help eliminate this preventable disease. We’re also sharing a special acknowledgement to Menzies First Nations Senior Research Fellow, Associate Professor Aunty Vicki Wade, who both produced and features in the film. Her invaluable contribution is a testament to the leadership and commitment of First Nations peoples in improving health outcomes. • Menzies led journal article, shines a light on the crucial role of Aboriginal Kidney Health Mentors in supporting people through the transplant journey. These mentors offer care that is grounded in culture, trust, and respect. Key takeaways from the research include: ➡ Mentors with lived experience support First Nations patients on the kidney transplant journey. ➡ More funding and policy changes are needed to strengthen mentor roles and improve patient health. This important work, supported by the National Indigenous Kidney Transplant Taskforce and implemented by Purple House, showcases the need to build the Aboriginal health workforce to improve both patient care and health outcomes.
