Our Founding Director, Rob McGauran, has been honoured with the 2024 Arts Alumni Award by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. Presented on 29 May by Dean Professor Lesley Stirling, this award recognises his outstanding contributions in urban design, affordable housing, and urban renewal. Rob's visionary leadership has reshaped universities and communities, with notable projects including the masterplans for Monash University, the University of Canberra, and RMIT's City North Innovation Campus. Reflecting on his journey, Rob shares, "I had great teachers and researchers... Their knowledge, passion, curiosity, and encouragement were both infectious and motivating and transported my career to one built around the importance of good research, transdisciplinary collaboration, and the value of a compelling narrative and vision." Congratulations, Rob, on this well-deserved recognition.
About us
To us, brilliance lies in the power of combinations others often fail to reconcile. In our world, the competing demands of living well yet sustainably are coupled with the desire for individual expression, the need for community and a longing to be delighted and intrigued. MGS can rightfully claim to be the practice that embraces this tension, finding opportunity in the dichotomies others dismiss. Combining architectural best practice with complementary thinking about our social milieu, MGS reframes the tensions in the brief as opportunities. Our clients benefit from optimistic approaches to real world solutions that are commercially successful, resilient and enabling. We offer an expanded idea of architecture and design, drawing on our strengths in advocacy, artistry, business acumen, research, policy development and community engagement. Our work is guided by insight into the community we service and is allied to a deep sense of commerciality. We are driven by an educated curiosity and a desire to do work that contributes to our clients' prosperity and the development of the inclusive city. MGS exists to create quietly brilliant places — places with longevity and adaptability that deliver daily value to the people who use them.

MGS Architects is proud to be participating in the annual MCM Sleep At The 'G event on Thursday, May 16th! We invite you to join our dedicated team in supporting this important cause. Your contribution, regardless of size, will make a meaningful impact. To donate, please visit the MGS fundraising page: https://lnkd.in/ggbehZ_c In our ongoing work within the social and affordable housing sector, we've directly observed the significant challenges faced by those at risk of homelessness. Recently, we've had the privilege of partnering with Melbourne City Mission (MCM) and have been moved by the impactful work they undertake within this space to effect real change in the lives of young people confronting homelessness. By braving a night at the MCG, we aim to both raise awareness and fundraise for MCM's vital youth homelessness services. Thank you for standing in solidarity with those experiencing homelessness and supporting this important cause! #MCMSleepAtTheG

Doreen Primary School – New Administration Building Construction has commenced with foundations and structural framing swiftly coming together. The new administration building is the first of two new buildings that formed part of our master plan that strategically positions the buildings within the existing campus, whose thoughtful integration ensures accessibility across a sloped terrain while enriching the daily experiences of both students and staff. A new learning and teaching building for prep to grade two students is to follow. Victorian School Building Authority Cobalt Construction Inc. Fitzgerald Frisby Landscape Architecture

The Central Precinct at Xavier College is now complete – the Kostka building is alive with students, inhabiting the learning street, spilling into the landscapes, and engaging in its layered, bright and comfortable spaces. The Chapel Oval has been reimagined as a Travel Hub, with safe drop-off and end-of-trip facilities, sleeved with high-quality change and wellness facilities to support the College’s well-known sports program. Special thanks to Andrew Broffman for his thoughtful review in ArchitectureAU of Eli Giannini's presentation at the 2023 Australian Architecture Conference, held at ANU in Canberra. Broffman highlights a key aspect of Giannini's talk, "Eli Giannini spoke...of what she called 'the beauty of space.' Decrying the tendency for Australian architecture to 'become globalized and undifferentiated,' Giannini argued that contemporary architecture has become too enamoured with the architectural screen that “masks” the spaces within, and as a result, it fails to celebrate a more meaningful sense of place." Reflecting on the conference's collaborative spirit, Eli shared, "It was good to share ideas with colleagues and celebrate together the achievements of so many across our profession."
