About us
Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) is an organisation made up of people from all walks of life. It includes professionals, those living with mental illness, families of those living with mental illness, organisations concerned with mental health and members of the public with an interest in mental health. Mental Health Foundation Australia is the oldest Mental Health Association in Australia. Founded in 1930 as the Victorian Council for Mental Hygiene, then later the Victorian Association for Mental Health, MHFA has been part of the national and international mental health movement for over 70 years. MHFA works to deepen understanding of the importance of mental wellbeing. Educating the community about available treatment options for mental illness is a large part of our brief, but our primary emphasis is on promoting good mental health and the means to maintain it. The Foundation’s work has been fundamental to changing community attitudes and raising awareness of the importance of good mental health. The primary aims of Mental Health Foundation Australia are: - To promote mental health and attitudes to mental health; - To establish collaboration with governments, individuals, and health related agencies, groups and organisations; - To make recommendations regarding mental health policy, implementation and services; - Encourage and initiate mental health research; - Encourage the highest standards in training and practice for the mental health professions; - To establish and support organisations which provide service, support and advice to the community; - To stimulate the development of informed public debate and opinion on mental health issues; - To work to remove stigma within the wider community associated with mental ill health. - To build bridges between those with mental illness and those without, to link our community together.

Day 28 of the Youth Multicultural Resilience Workshop As part of our 6th National Multicultural Mental Health Month Awareness Campaign, today’s workshop brought to light the unique challenges that recently arrived youth from multicultural backgrounds face in their journey to settle into a new community. From limited English skills to navigating employment and social activities, these young people often encounter barriers that can impact their mental well-being, self-confidence, and sense of belonging. Without the ability to fully connect with others in their neighbourhood, these struggles can lead to feelings of isolation and hinder the building of meaningful friendships. Through the Mental Health Foundation Australia's Multicultural Youth Resilience Project, we’re dedicated to helping young people overcome these hurdles. In our workshops, we create a supportive, non-judgmental space where youth can gain a deeper understanding of mental health, while developing resilience and confidence. With each session, we’re building a foundation that empowers them to thrive and truly feel at home here in Australia.

CEO/Managing Director | Disability Advocate | Disability Housing 🏘 Empowered Liveability SDA | Wyngate Care | Sharnic Connect
Absolutely fantastic evening last night speaking at the Mental Health Foundation Australia Forum for Disability & Mental Health The intersection of dual diagnosis, of disability/mental health/drug & alcohol, is such an important topic, especially as the National Disability Insurance Agency looks to decrease funding of mental health and AOD. How do we holistically support the whole person, without providing support for half of what they go through? Our lived experience speaker Shannon, who lives with bipolar disorder which has coexisted alongside addiction, also has had one leg amputated. He originally accessed NDIS for his bipolar, but has struggled since his amputation, and had funding decreased for his mental health. His incredible support coordinator Dimmi from Nolastray Support spoke about the issues her participants are facing daily around the supports they need. I see so many ‘chicken or the egg’ situations, where a disability has exacerbated a mental health condition, or where drugs have caused an acquired brain injury, where acquired disability (where no counselling/support has been given) mental health and AOD has followed. We need to support people holistically, the medical establishment cannot keep up with the general publics mental health, and they don’t understand the complexities of co-morbidities. Wait lists are long, and so many people are suffering due to no access with the public mental health system. It’s up to us as providers, especially within the housing/supported living space, to have well versed, up skilled staff, who have an understanding of disability, mental health, and Alcohol & other drugs, to increase the quality of supports, but also to know when a participant is struggling and may need referrals to other specialised supports as part of their care team, so we can all come together and support the whole person, not just part of them A big thank you to our gracious hosts Vasan Srinivasan and Abi Srinivasan for having me and the Empowered Liveability team on board for this important event as part of mental health month The event was also live-streamed across their socials and can be re-watched #mentalhealthfoundationaustralia #empoweredliveability #mentalhealth #disability #specialistdisabilityaccommodation #liveonyourownterms #addiction #support Goro Gupta Jack Gibb Bronwen Gourley Jenelle Basiaco Tanya Sexton Ally Doherty Joseph Sulfaro Samantha Prior Kelli Wright Laiho

World Food Day during the 6th National Multicultural Mental Health Month The right to food is a fundamental human right, ensuring every individual has access to sufficient, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food. Today, Mental Health Foundation Australia delivered 700 freshly cooked pasta meals to vulnerable communities in Melbourne. MHFA sincerely thanks the Melbourne Dawoodi Bohra community for generously providing all the necessary ingredients for today’s meal delivery program. This is not the first time they have supported MHFA in delivering such an impactful service. A special thanks to Mr. Karan Gandhok, a dedicated Ambassador since the inception of National Multicultural Mental Health Month. Today, despite his own major events with Tandoori Junction catering, he single-handedly assisted in preparing all 700 meals from early morning. MHFA would also like to extend gratitude to Subra Ramachandran, Latha Vasan, Rama Subramanian, Kamini Shankar, Ramya Sivaraman, Mohan Shankar S R, Kumari Sathvika, and little Sankrith for their invaluable help in preparing and packaging the meals. Without their support, this achievement on World Food Day would not have been possible.

In celebration of World Mental Health Day, our team member Eleanor attended the Youth Mental Health Forum hosted by the Mental Health Foundation Australia The forum focused on the impact of social media on young people, with a highlight being Dr. Alberto Veloso’s discussion on the relationship between the brain and social media. We were also inspired by a conversation about the role of language in mental health discussions. There was so much to explore, and we are grateful to have participated in such a thought-provoking and insightful event!

Standing for Re-election for Westerfolds Ward Manningham City Accredited Mental Health First Aid Instructor Authorised: Michelle Kleinert 15A Anderson st. Templestowe 3106
Feedback like this is immeasurable. Thank you for being an awesome participant. It’s a passion of mine to continue sharing how we can make a difference in someone’s life. I also thank Mental Health Foundation Australia for championing this course. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthfirstaid
Today I completed the Mental Health First Aid course with the goal of being able to recognise signs of mental health issues and offer appropriate help and support, whether I am engaging with women in the workplace, or interacting within my social network. I had the privilege of attending this course, led by Michelle Kleinert OAM GAICD. Michelle’s expertise and passion for mental health were evident throughout the training. She created a safe and engaging environment for everyone in the class and she encouraged open discussions. Her ability to present complex topics in a relatable and accessible way made the learning process not only informative but also enjoyable. I highly recommend Michelle Kleinert OAM GAICD and encourage all workplaces to offer this training course. Thank you Michelle! https://lnkd.in/gFwKJ_jY #mentalhealth #mentalhealthintheworkplace #mentalhealthfirstaid #
