We had the pleasure of welcoming Tricia Ciampa, CEO of Women and Mentoring - WAM Ltd (WAM), for a truly enlightening lunchtime talk in our Melbourne office, hosted by Office Managing Partner Matthew Hibbins. Tricia shed light on WAM's incredible work and the powerful impact of their mentorship programs. Her passion and the personal stories she shared underscored the importance of the support our firm has provided through pro bono work. The event was further enhanced by the "Picturing My Strengths" photo exhibition, which beautifully illustrated the strength and resilience of WAM's community. This event kicked off our employee Community Conversations series that helps to create meaningful engagement with our community through important conversations. Thank you, Tricia, for being so generous with your time.

For over a decade, MinterEllison has supported BYS through pro bono legal advice, volunteering at working bees, and even donning daggy jumpers for the cause! What's more, their work has been instrumental in securing the leases for our new Youth Support Centre and Young Women, Families, and Safe Relationships Centre, creating safe spaces for young people in need. We’re grateful for their ongoing support in helping us break the cycle of homelessness. Read the story to see how MinterEllison’s contributions have enabled us to expand critical services and discover how your organisation could partner with BYS to make a lasting impact.

The Victorian Department of Transport and Planning is seeking feedback on draft planning scheme controls for Strategic Extractive Resources Areas (SERAs) in Lang Lang, Oaklands Junction and Trafalgar by 8 November 2024. These controls aim to safeguard state-significant extractive resources from incompatible land uses and secure affordable housing and infrastructure for Victoria's growing population. MinterEllison was proud to host the Hindu Council of Australia dinner in Sydney last night to celebrate the growing importance of tertiary education links between Australia and India, and the visit of Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Minister of Education for India. It was wonderful to have in attendance His Excellency Mr Gopal Baglay, Indian High Commissioner to Australia. The Australian Minister for Education, The Hon Jason Clare MP, The Hon Andrew Giles MP, Minister for Skills & Training, the Hon Andrew Charlton MP, Member for Parramatta, Shri Sai Paravastu, National President of the Hindu Council of Australia, along with leaders of universities, TAFE and independent tertiary education providers also joined us on this special occasion. Minister Pradhan and Minister Clare both highlighted the expanding and significant connections between Australia and India, with education being a key driver in strengthening this bilateral relationship. The MinterEllison team, Matt Cunningham, Michael J. Wells, Kylie Diwell, Tom Fletcher, and Harriet Eager, were delighted to be contributing their insights and support.

In response to the surge in cyber attacks on Australian businesses and individuals, the Federal Government has introduced the Cyber Security Bill 2024 (Cth) into Parliament. The Bill aims to strengthen Australia’s cyber security framework and position the nation as a global leader in cyber security by 2030. The Bill encourages cooperation, building trust between the government and industry, information sharing and reporting, and emphasises the need for both the government and industry to learn from past cybersecurity incidents. The Australian Government has recognised that our current regulatory system is not fit for purpose to respond to the distinct risks that AI poses, releasing a proposals paper to introduce mandatory guardrails for AI in high-risk settings. The proposed guardrails are designed with the future of AI in mind, and will impact organisations economy-wide, requiring new risk management protocols and increased transparency in AI processes.
