Championing LGBTQIA+ young people is about empowering them to thrive. When the Minus18 Team reflected on our own challenges as queer people, we had some shared experiences on the barriers we faced and the lessons we learned throughout our working life. Because as much as generalised career advice is helpful, there are some added considerations when being a queer person at work. So, we started to think about the advice we would give to young people who are either entering the workforce for the first time, or who are navigating different professional experiences. LGBTQIA+ people won't be included in the next Census. Again. It was looking like 2026 would finally be the year LGBTQIA+ Australians and families would be counted, helping to shape services and policies. But yesterday, the Federal Government announced that there will be no changes made to the Census to reflect any questions surrounding LGBTQIA+ identities. This is despite the Australian Bureau of Statistics proposing a shortlist of changes – including capturing Australian people's gender identity, sexuality and variations of sex characteristics. Our community is being pushed into invisibility. And with Wear It Purple® Day this Friday, it's a timely reminder of the importance of visibly advocating for LGBTQIA+ identities. Whether you're a part of the community, or an ally, use your voice to amplify the needs of LGBTQIA+ people.
