Advancing innovative and transformative approaches to global peace and security challenges.
About us
The Monash Centre for Global Peace and Security (formerly Monash Gender, Peace and Security) seeks to advance inclusive and transformative approaches to global peace and security challenges. Our ambition is to mobilise research to prevent or end conflict and (re)build thriving communities that are free of threat and insecurity. Our research informs scholarly debate, policy development and implementation, and public understanding about the complex nature of insecurity and the search for peace. In addition to research with international, government and industry partners, community-engagement with civil society, and academic publications, Monash GPS academics engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching, executive education and PhD supervision.

Fantastic event, inspiring presentations & invaluable Report, helping to raise awareness of the barriers & opportunities to better engage #women & support their leadership in #defence institutions to advance #security & #genderequality including through family support #caringresponsibilities #ElsieInitiative #WPS DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance Eleanor Gordon Llani "LJ" Kennealy Government of Canada Lauren Lowe Richard Fosu, PhD Joana Ama Osei-Tutu Jane Townsley Irine Hiraswari Gayatri, PhD Jennifer Grover Anushka Chavan Tishya Khillare (Ph.D.) Katrina Lee-Koo Jen Wittwer, CSM, FCPHR Monash University
Last Friday, DCAF joined with the Missions of #Germany, #Switzerland and #India and United Nations Peacekeeping to launch the newly published report “Towards Equal Opportunity for Women in the Defence Sector”. This is the first-ever global, evidence-based analysis of the participation of women in national #defence institutions. ➡️ The President of the Swiss Confederation, Viola Amherd, encouraged male military leaders, to support their female colleagues and facilitate equal access to jobs. ➡️ Liberian Minister of Defense Brigadier General Geraldine Janet George described how the Liberian Armed Forces had changed the narrative and the operational environment to attract female recruits. ➡️ Major General Cheryl Pearce AM CSC, the UN’s second-most senior Blue Beret, underscored that empowering women in defence is a necessity for our collective #security. ➡️ Gesa Bräutigam, Germany’s Special Ambassador for Feminist Foreign Policy framed gender equality in defence as an aspect of achieving the #PactfortheFuture. DCAF's Director, Nathalie Chuard, moderated the discussion with the Liberian Minister of Defense and senior military officers from #Germany, #Hungary, #India and #Nigeria. The discussion welcomed the report as a baseline for countries to compare their progress and practices. Panelists highlighted the importance of gathering data on barriers, refreshing outreach and recruitment processes to inspire women to apply, family support and ― cutting across all measures ― addressing gender-biased attitudes and building a culture of respect for all. Recruiting and retaining women was identified as key to armed forces’ level of public trust, and to their ability to compete with the private sector for expert personnel. DCAF thanks all who participated in this event and is proud to have been the UN’s research partner in the development of this report. Fantastic to be at #UNSC #WPS Open Debate today. Stand out message from #Canada - we must ‘not be suffocated by negativity’ but take inspiration from the many young women engaged in efforts to advance peace, security, justice. #UNSG Report highlights #women even less involved in #peace processes, twice as many women died in conflicts in 2023 than 2022 & #CRSV increased by 50% - underscoring need more than ever for #politicalwill & #implementation as underscored by #Germany - ‘it is neither knowledge nor awareness that is missing’ Monash Global Peace and Security (GPS) Centre Llani "LJ" Kennealy
