Carefully specifying natural materials like timber and their low VOC coatings, can create healthier spaces for us to work in. As people spend more than 80% of their time inside buildings, we look to champion the use of timber in design. Imagine if buildings had labels listing their “ingredients”. Designs that incorporated materials such as aluminium or plastic, could resemble “junk food,” filled with chemicals and toxins.

#ShouSugiBanWeek | Day 5: What species can you use with the Shou Sugi Ban technique? Here are the species we char at Mortlock Timber: - Burnt ash😎, a thermally modified American hardwood, is ideal for Shou Sugi Ban. Its high stability and lower density allow for a deeper char layer, reducing maintenance and enhancing durability. The light brown timber takes on a sleek, contemporary look when charred, making it a premium choice at Mortlock Timber. - Irongum😮, native to eastern Australia and its durable heartwood ranges from light to dark red. When charred with Shou Sugi Ban, the interlocked grain surfaces through the char, creating a crocodile-like texture while preserving its natural beauty. - Spotted gum😠, revered for its durability and distinctive grain patterns, harmonises exceptionally well with the charring process, creating a striking visual impact. Due to its naturally high fire-resistant properties, charred spotted gum battens and cladding are often used in bushfire zones where BAL 29 is required.
