Today our State and Federal Governments responded to the Royal Commission's recommendations on Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission), which were handed down in a Final Report in September 2023. The Final Report had 222 recommendations for change, of which 132 were applicable to Western Australia. The Federal Government has accepted in full 13 and in principle 117 of the 172 recommendations it has primary or shared responsibility for, and the Western Australian Government accepted 5 recommendations in full, 94 in principle, 1 in part and will further consider the remaining 32. These recommendations aim for better legal protection, safer services, greater accessibility and inclusion, and a more empowering environment for people with disabilities. MSWA acknowledges the courage of all individuals, carers, and families who shared their lived experiences with the Royal Commission. We look forward to working with the Government and the sector in making the recommended changes. At MSWA, we understand the importance of placing the community's priorities at the forefront. We value the voices, opinions, and perspectives of our neurological community. MSWA supports the response of the State Government and the need for further consultation and co-design with the community to deliver better outcomes and protect against unintended consequences in areas that require further consideration. Today, we are announcing our response to the Royal Commissions recommendations on Abuse, Violence, Neglect, and Exploitation of People with Disability. Out of the 222 recommendations, 132 are applicable to WA, the State Government has accepted 100 of them and we are leading 66 as an agency. These recommendations mark a significant step forward in creating safer, more empowering communities for people with disability. We are dedicated to continually improving our support systems, and these recommendations will play a crucial role in enhancing laws and practices to better protect individuals with disabilities. Neurological conditions are on the rise in Australia and worldwide, yet despite being recognised as one of the nation’s top disease burdens, neurological conditions remain under-recognised and underfunded. A National Summit in Canberra hoped to change that today, with calls for the establishment of a Taskforce for Neurological Conditions, to urgently address the needs of millions of forgotten Australians. MSWA CEO Melanie Kiely GAICD attended the summit today, supporting the launch of the important 'Count Us In' campaign which aims to drive meaningful change. See her thoughts below. I was lucky to have represented MSWA at a very inspiring and humbling day at the National Summit on Neurological Conditions at Parliament House today. A beautiful sunny day in Canberra and amazing accounts from our community living with neurological conditions. The launch of the ‘Count us In’ campaign and video sums it up. We need more focus within the ndis and aged care of understanding and supporting people and their carers navigating journeys that are difficult. Let’s hope their voices and our voices are heard by those politicians as we clearly head towards the next elections. What is clear is that research matters too. To all those that continue to donate and buy MSWA lottery tickets, thank you. It really makes a difference and that was evident today.
