About us
The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) is the national peak body representing 146 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) across the country on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing issues. NACCHO is the third largest employer of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia, with over 3,500 out of the 6,000 staff working in ACCHOs being either of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background. Our primary health care network represents a national footprint of more than 550 sites. ACCHOs provide 3.1 million episodes of care per year for almost 410,000 people across Australia, including about one million episodes of care in remote regions.

Congratulations to Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services (KAMS) Medical Director, Dr Lorraine Anderson, honoured as a Medicare Champion at the Stronger Medicare Awards! 👏
Minister for Health and Aged Care, Member for Hindmarsh, Authorised by Mark Butler, ALP, Port Adelaide
When Medicare was introduced by the Hawke Government it changed the nation. Before the 1st of February 1984, 1 in 7 Australians did not have health coverage. The leading cause of personal bankruptcies was unpaid health and hospital bills. After the 1st of February 1984, they stopped measuring that as a cause of bankruptcy, because it disappeared overnight. It simply disappeared. The primary health care professionals that give their all are the beating heart of Medicare. Without them, Medicare is little more than an idea. Last night, we honoured our health care Medicare Champions at the Stronger Medicare Awards. Thank you for everything you do.

The first 5 years of a child's life is so important for their development. These are the years where growing up in a supportive and engaging environment can help set the trajectory of their life. Central Australian Aboriginal Congress shows us how the Connected Beginnings program operates in their community of Mpwarntwe/Alice Springs. Congress provides wrap-around and culturally safe supports for Aboriginal children and their families so that they are equipped with the right tools to thrive in their early childhood education and care journeys.

The Elder Care Support Program is addressing what has been missing in the aged care system for decades: simpler, culturally safe, and community-led process for Elders and older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to navigate the aged care system and access the aged care services they are entitled to. Vienna Richards, former Elder Care Support Workforce Training Coordinator at AMSANT, says even simple home modifications can go a long way, and the program is “potentially very life saving for Elders.” To learn more, go here: https://lnkd.in/g38e6QN9 care-support-program #ElderCareSupport #ECS #AgedCare #OurHealthInOurHands Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Services AH&MRC of NSW Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC) AHCWA (Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia) Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia AMSANT Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre
