We love sharing stories of the courage and resistance of our clients as well as the human rights lawyers on our team who fight alongside them against discrimination and injustice. We are delighted that our supporters like Anna Funder have the courage to join us in this fight. The National Justice Project doesn't accept government funding so we can hold them to account and that's why the support of our donors is vital to ensure our independence. We are excited to share news of our ‘Hear Me Out’ website, the first AI-powered complaint platform in Australia. The free tool at HearMeOut.org.au allows users to enter information about their experience and receive recommendations on where and how to make their complaint. The initial focus of Hear Me Out is on NSW and federal complaint bodies. HearMeOut.org.au helps simplify the complicated and confusing complaints process, making it easier for community voices to be heard and to help create meaningful change as well as providing a pathway to justice for complaints. Hear Me Out delivers a range of legal resources, factsheets and guidance about the processes of more than 75 complaint bodies with plans to add more organisations as the platform expands nationwide. The information gathered will help expose systemic problems in society, allowing us to identify them and in some cases address them head-on to advocate for impactful reforms that can benefit the entire community. Hear Me Out has been created by the vision of many including George Newhouse, Daniel Ghezelbash, Heike Fabig and Ariane Dozer in collaboration with the National Justice Project, UNSW Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law, Macquarie University, K&L Gates, auDA - .au Domain Administration Ltd. Portable and the NSW Ombudsman. Congratulations to Dean Moutopoulos for leading the project and we are particularly indebted to the many volunteers and legal tech supporters who helped bring this to life. Visit HearMeOut.org.au and help more people hear about Hear Me Out.

A family who waited 36 years for answers about the deaths of two Indigenous girls in Bourke says it is "disgraceful" that police have disregarded a key recommendation from the coroner who conducted a recent inquest. National Justice Project's George Newhouse says: "The family has had a gutful of the way they're treated by police in Far West NSW, and now they're being insulted by the highest ranking officer in our state". https://lnkd.in/gw4aygbw

NSW Police Commissioner's response to State Coroner 'shameful' on inquest. The National Justice Project has slammed the NSW Police Commissioner, Karen Webb, for rejecting a key recommendation from the coronial inquest into the deaths of Mona and Cindy Smith. Our CEO George Newhouse says the Commissioner's disregard "perpetuates what many people see as the racist culture of NSW Police". ⬇ https://lnkd.in/dgiK7p7U

The NT Government's announcement of 1000 new prison beds will not break cycles of reincarceration or reduce crime – it will do the opposite. We need real investment at the community level to address the drivers of crime, not expensive band-aid solutions. Read more in our media release: https://loom.ly/Rmm0RSo

This morning, the Commission released the findings of nationwide consultations with people with lived experience of racism. The report, 'An Anti-Racism Framework: The Experiences and Perspectives of Multicultural Australia', was commissioned by the AHRC and conducted by the Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA). Among the key findings was that, despite the diversity of people’s backgrounds – including location, age, disability, sexuality, faith and cultural background – racism was prevalent throughout the country and entrenched in society. It also found governments and the media are culpable in further marginalising people through a culture of silence which either ignores or minimises incidents of racism, or stokes divisions through sensationalist rhetoric. Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman will release the report today at the FECCA Conference in Brisbane, where he will deliver a keynote address. “These powerful and at times heartbreaking first-hand accounts reaffirm the fact that racism in Australia is ubiquitous, insidious and profoundly damaging," he said. “People spoke of how they felt they had to lose their identity to fit in, their experience of subtle acts of discrimination or alienation at school, work or their communities, and biases they felt in dealing with those in power. Sadly, people not feeling safe because of their race is widespread.” Read the statement in full: https://loom.ly/ywBWK8Y Read the report here: https://loom.ly/PtiXxKw
