Are you ready to learn more about the PPWR without having to go through the entire legal text....... 🎓 🌱 📦 In April 2024, the EU Parliament and Council agreed – in draft – the legal text for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). What is the PPWR? When will it enter into force? In which countries will it be applicable? The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is an EU-wide regulation aimed at reducing packaging waste, improving recycling, and promoting more sustainable packaging across the European Union (EU). The regulation is part of the EU's broader efforts to transition to a circular economy. The PPWR's intention is to make all packaging placed on the market recyclable and establish requirements for the entire life cycle of packaging regarding environmental sustainability and labelling. It also covers extended producer responsibility, packaging waste prevention, such as reduction of unnecessary packaging and reuse or refill of packaging, as well as collection, treatment and recycling of packaging waste. Depending on the final steps of the legislative process, we expect that the PPWR will enter into force at the beginning of 2025 and its provision will start to be applicable from mid-2026. However, some of the provisions will take effect from 2030 (e.g. Design for Recycling, minimum PCR content in plastic part of the packaging, re-use targets), from 2035 (e.g. recycled at scale requirement) or from 2040 (e.g. increased re-use targets, minimum PCR content in plastic part of packaging).
