Credit-card-sized work of art folds into a badass metal pen This is quite possibly the most over-engineered pen I've ever come across, and it looks like it's straight out of a spycraft lab. The Hancept Zero Mk2 is a 2-mm-thick contraption that can slip into a credit card slot, and magically fold into a hexagonal pen in a snap. Made from aluminum and stainless steel, it's designed for folks who simply can't afford to be seen carrying a pen – but are happier to whip one out of their wallets. It's made up of 54 precisely machined interlocking parts and accepts a standard D-1 ballpoint refill, so it should be easy to use for a long time to come. Twisting box Portlantis exhibits energy positive design MVRDV recently completed work on an unusual new building that takes the form of a stack of twisting boxes. Named Portlantis, the energy positive project hosts exhibition spaces and will be dismantled and recycled when its useful life comes to an end. Originally revealed back in 2021 as the Harbour Experience Centre, Portlantis is located in the Port of Rotterdam and overlooks both the wider port area and the North Sea. For sale: A whole motorcycle company for the price of a Bugatti Chiron You haven’t heard of a garage sale like this – for everything is on offer. A few months ago, we covered the news of electric motorcycle company Energica going bankrupt. We now have information on what will happen with Energica and almost everything associated with the brand. All of the company's assets, including intellectual property, the name and branding, and even unfinished and prototype motorcycles, were recently offered for auction. But there are still no buyers, as of writing. Continue reading: https://lnkd.in/gV4UbM2q #MotorcycleCompanyForSale #EnergicaSale #BankruptButNotBroken #EnergicaRevival

Keel laid for HMS Dreadnought, the Royal Navy's largest ever submarine Britain has laid the keel for the Royal Navy's largest-ever submarine. At BAE Systems's Barrow-in-Furness facility, the ceremony marked the "birth" of the nuclear-powered and armed HMS Dreadnought, one of the most advanced submarines to date. Keel laying is the major milestone in the building of a ship. The keel is the main structural member of the ship's hull and laying it down is the equivalent to laying the cornerstone of a building. However, with HMS Dreadnought (S32) the ceremony is largely symbolic and can be a bit confusing for those not familiar with submarines or modern shipbuilding methods. Half of bowel disease cases result in premature death – AI can change this A new AI model can predict the likelihood of premature death from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with around 95% accuracy. This is good news, though – because, by looking beyond the gut for early treatment of other chronic illnesses, the early mortality rate can be significantly reduced. A new study by Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto, the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), and the SickKids Research Institute, along with McGill University and Trillium Health Partners, has found that AI intervention can provide crucial intervention that addresses multimorbidities – two or more other health conditions – in patients with IBD, allowing for early treatment of those other issues that may not get addressed until they've worsened. US to deploy world's first sixth-gen fighter by end of decade The US Air Force has announced that it will go ahead with the production of the F-47 Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter. Expected to enter service by the end of the decade, it will replace the F-22 Raptor as America's air supremacy fighter. Friday's announcement by the Air Force and President Trump ends months of speculation about the fate of the F-47 project. In defense circles, there was uncertainty as to whether the fighter would be greenlit as part of the administration's goal of strengthening the US military or fall victim to its commitment to drastically cut federal spending. Strong infrared signals could reveal alien life on "waterworld" planets Finding alien life won’t be as dramatic as a flying saucer landing on the White House lawn – it’ll be NASA scientists holding a press conference to excitedly show off a chart that’s incomprehensible to most people. Now, we’re a step closer to that boring but groundbreaking day. Astronomers from the University of California, Riverside (UCR) have identified a new potential signature to look for in the atmospheres of exoplanets, which could indicate life is present. It’s a group of gases called methyl halides, which are made up of a carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms bound to a halogen atom. MIT's artificial muscles for soft robots flex like a human iris Engineers at MIT have devised an ingenious new way to produce artificial muscles for soft robots that can flex in more than one direction, similar to the complex muscles in the human body. The team leveraged 3D printing and muscle cells derived from humans and mice to grow an artificial structure that pulls concentrically and radially, similar to how the human iris dilates and constricts the pupil. Carbon-deck electric skateboard looks like it belongs in The Matrix As is the case with ebikes, there are some electric skateboards that hide their tech in a retro design, and others that absolutely revel in it. Parsec's Aero Pro is definitely among the latter, looking a bit like an e-skateboard from the future. There are actually two versions of the Aero Pro, the S and the longer-range X. Morgan Supersport: A turbocharged retro alternative to the Porsche 911 If the devil is in the detail, Morgan has just produced a devilishly good-looking car boasting heavenly lines and a gorgeous retro feel. In fact, we'd say it’s easily one of the best reincarnations of a vintage silhouette… and one that promises an equally exhilarating drive. Morgan has just revealed its Supersport, which may look like a 50s roadster but sure drives like a modern sports car thanks to the lightweight aluminum chassis, a turbocharged engine, and independent suspension.
