Responsibly managed plantation forestry in Sub-Saharan Africa is becoming an increasingly attractive asset class. The African continent hosts 17% of the world’s forests. However, nearly four million hectares of these are lost each year, with 700 million hectares of degraded land that could be restored. At New Forests we are focused on growing this area of sustainable investment, with our African Forestry Impact Platform spotlighting four key areas of impact – climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, gender and diversity, and community and livelihoods. Eva Warigia, New Forests’ Associate Director, Investor Relations spoke to ESG Investor about our work in Africa and how we’re determined to leave a better world for future generations. Following the announcement late last year that Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) and New Agriculture had entered into an agreement to acquire a Kimberley cattle portfolio, we’re pleased to share this transaction has now been completed, with regulatory approvals received. The Kimberley cattle portfolio is a large-scale cattle breeding business that spans almost 3 million hectares in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, and will be known as Yougawalla Pastoral Co. The portfolio consists of seven pastoral leases (1,828,692ha), and five sub-leases (924,325ha), as well as an agistment agreement over 153,475ha. Working closely with our investment partner Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo), we are looking forward to applying the same level of rigour and commitment to sustainability that New Forests has in the forestry space, to the agriculture sector. New Agriculture will continue to focus on sustainability practices which allow for not only the protection and restoration of landscapes, but which also lead to the enhancement of natural capital over time.
