At a recent information evening focused on all things Hand & Upper Limb, we were fortunate enough to hear from Dr. Chris Conyard and learn about the incredible work he does for his charity, A Million Metres for Melanoma. A Million Metres for Melanoma was established by truly inspiring individuals who have come together to raise funds for what they believe will contribute to an early detection and save lives. The charity is dedicated raising funds for the Vector 360, a machine that generates detailed 3D images of a patient's skin, accurately replicating its surface and facilitating the identification of changes between check-ups. Regardless of whether it's an acute or chronic shoulder dislocation, complications such as tears, fractures, and nerve damage can arise. Even more concerning is the prevalence of inadequately managed injuries, which significantly increases the likelihood of re-injury within the first two years after the initial incident. Discover how our therapists combine strengthening exercises and treatment strategies to address both acute and chronic shoulder dislocations, thereby minimising this risk. Emma Gilsenan, a leading therapist at Action Rehab Hand Therapy in Melbourne, emphasises the significance of using appropriate treatment methods when dealing with shoulder dislocations. See how our therapists used a relative motion orthosis combined with a thermo buddy to help enhance the range of motion and reduce rotational deformities for a patient who suffered a nasty finger fracture. This innovation has been instrumental in assisting SOUTHERN STORM SOFTBALL INC player, Jessie Seefus, in her recovery from a severe finger fracture. She visited us 10 weeks after the injury, having been informed that returning to play would take a considerable amount of time. During her initial assessment, it was evident that her range of movement was quite restricted; however, our orthosis made a significant difference in her mobility. As expert hand therapists, we frequently receive inquiries about our approach to managing the unraveling of Thumb Carpometacarpal Joint Osteoarthritis. Our therapists utilise various conservative treatments aimed at alleviating pain, stabilising ligaments, and enhancing both the range of motion and strength to support hand function. We also incorporate splinting, which provides support to the hand, increases web space, and immobilises the CMCJ, resulting in reduced pain and improved functionality over time. Custom splints are particularly beneficial for enhancing pain relief, strength, and overall hand performance. Additionally, gradual exercises are implemented to boost range of motion while minimising discomfort. In summary, a combination of splinting, exercises, and nerve mobilisation proves effective in pain relief, although not every patient may see an improvement in grip strength.
