It's been five years. The Gospers Mountain fire started on 26 October 2019 and burned approximately 512,626 hectares, becoming one of the biggest forest fires in Australian history. 🔥 Innovation to Tackle Natural Hazards 🔥 The NSW Government is supporting 10 innovative businesses through the $1.89 million Natural Hazards Technology Program (NHTP) to tackle challenges faced by agencies in the management of natural hazards. The program is designed to: 🎇 Find technology solutions to the challenges faced by NSW Government agencies in responding to natural hazards. 🎇 Support innovative NSW businesses to field-test and refine their technologies with these agencies, creating opportunities for future collaboration. 🎇 Build awareness of the latest innovation possibilities in managing and preparing for natural hazards, improving how agencies respond to emergencies. From AI-powered multilingual emergency warnings to drone-based hazard assessments, these advancements will help ensure the safety of our communities. Nine NSW Government agencies, including Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Rural Fire Service, and the NSW State Emergency Service Service, will partner to trial these technologies. Congratulations to BNHRC Node Leader Prof David Keith of UNSW on last week's Eureka Prize! A world leader in botany, ecology and conservation biology, David took the Australian Institute of Botanical Science Eureka Prize for Excellence in Botanical Science. He led a major international collaboration to develop the world’s first Global Ecosystem Typology – a framework for classifying, describing, conserving and restoring the world’s ecosystems. The Senate Select Committee on Australia’s Disaster Resilience was appointed by resolution of the Senate on 30 November 2022 to inquire into Australia’s preparedness, response and recovery workforce models, as well as alternative models to disaster recovery. Its report is now available.
