We had a fantastic turnout at the recent Pasture Field Day in Boggabri! Over 85 attendees gathered for a day of learning, brought to life by the incredible teamwork of our pasture team, North West Local Land Services, University of New England (AU) and University of Sydney. Our very own Mark Brennan shared insights with an on-farm demonstration comparing animal production on straight oats to a mixed fodder crop of oats, vetch, and 2nd generation canola. Our host producer highlighted how this mix enhances their system, notably extending the quality feed window. Missed the event? Here are three key takeaways: 1. Know what you want to achieve from your mixed forage crop – the host producer was using the mix to break up his crop rotation, control weeds and increase his window of quality feed. 2. Select species and varieties suited to your soil type, climate and system – for instance, this on farm demonstration mix had Kingbale Oats, Timor vetch and 2nd generation canola. 3. Planning and paddock preparation are important for good establishment and performance of forage crops – the producer recommends conserving moisture over summer and sowing by the calendar in autumn. This event is part of the Mixed Species Annual Fodder Crop project, a jointly funded by Meat & Livestock Australia and NSW Agriculture.

Can Technology Reduce Your Risk of Becoming a Victim of Crime? Rural crime is often underreported, but with the right technology, we can make a significant impact. The NSW Police Force and rural landowners are working together to enhance security through innovative solutions like GPS ear tags, CCTV systems, and more. Key steps to protect your property: Lock it up: Secure all entry points. Watch it: Install monitoring systems. Record it: Keep detailed records of your assets. Mark it: Use unique identifiers for your equipment and livestock. By leveraging these technologies, we can increase resilience against rural crime and make it harder for offenders to succeed. Let’s change the narrative and protect our rural communities.
