University of Newcastle has lodged a State Significant Development Application for its proposed student accommodation building in Newcastle, marking a major milestone for the project. This is set to house up to 445 students and address the critical shortage of accommodation for those who wish to study and live in the city. The proposed 9-storey building will also feature ground floor facilities and retail, as well as outdoor communal areas, bringing more people and activity into Honeysuckle. The submission will be assessed to ensure it aligns with regulatory requirements and community interests, and work is expected to begin on site later this year. More at https://bit.ly/4eT1UfT

We’re delighted to unveil Yimaliko Makoro, a new cultural artwork on the bank of Cottage Creek in Newcastle’s Honeysuckle precinct. With a name that means ‘encourage the fish’, the 2.3m piece features cast aluminium fish moving from the harbour through the creek. Artists Raymond and Tyler Smith created the piece as a reminder of Cottage Creek’s significance to First Nations people, as well as recent efforts to heal the creek’s ecosystem and encourage sea life back into the waterway. Yimaliko Makoro sits between Cottage Creek and the recently completed Little National Hotels in a newly opened park – just one of the public spaces HCCDC has created in Honeysuckle in recent years. It links with the nearby ‘Layers of Us’ art installation to create an engaging cultural walking route. Community engagement plays an important role in our projects, particularly when it comes to creating public spaces. Recently in Morisset in Lake Macquarie, we worked with a group of teenage girls as part of NSW Government’s Safer Cities program, which aims to increase women and girls’ safety and access to public spaces. We asked participants what makes them want to visit and stay in a public space. Their responses included decorative lighting, increased activity, cozy places to spend time with friends, colourful park elements and even somewhere to charge their devices. As well as gaining insight into what creates a safe and welcoming public space, this collaborative process also increases women and girl’s participation in the planning and design of our public spaces. The feedback will help guide public space interventions for teenage girls in Morisset later this year. Safer Cities program is funded by NSW Government and led by Transport for NSW. HCCDC welcomes today's announcement for Broadmeadow's future – with the vision for up to 20,000 new homes and 15,000 jobs, improved leisure facilities, vital infrastructure and public spaces for the people of the Hunter. City of Newcastle, Australia's draft Broadmeadow Place Strategy sets a vision for the precinct's revitalisation over the next 30 years, and will go to a vote of Councillors at the next Council meeting. If approved, the Strategy will then go on to Public Exhibition.
