Drainage solutions & traffic management products for the built environment

About us

Orca Civil is an Australian owned and operated business, with manufacturing facilities in Victoria. For over 20 years Orca has focused on delivering high value polymer concrete products for commercial construction, civil and infrastructure projects. Our core range of drainage solutions includes civil drainage grates, covers, polymer concrete drainage pits and polymer concrete channels. In 2017 Orca developed and patented technology to utilise glass destined for landfill as a key recycled component of our polymer concrete. The significance of using recycled glass leverages Australia’s ongoing issue with the disposal of waste glass, with the National Waste Account estimating over 475 kilotons going into landfill, per annum. Orca has expanded our range of recycled glass products, in our 100% solar powered manufacturing plant, to include an innovative range of modular traffic management products that are designed to increase road safety for motorists, cyclists and public transport, including tramways.

  • Did you know that Orca manufactures Australian made polymer concrete drainage channels as a high strength alternative to Portland cement drainage products? We’re diverting millions of glass bottles each year from Australian landfill to produce a range of polymer concrete products using recycled glass content in place of virgin quarried minerals. Pair our locally made channels with stainless steel, galvanized steel or ductile iron grates and frames to meet your project’s drainage needs for traffic type, visual appeal, load and frequency. If your project needs to meet a specific design aesthetic, choose stainless steel for streetscapes and commercial projects, as they did in Melbourne Square, Southbank. If you’re looking for predictable performance in a coastal location or high wear areas like South Yarra Railway Station, our galvanized steel grates are ideal. If your drainage solution needs to perform in industrial areas or corrosive environments like a petrol station, select our ductile iron grates. Or for the ultimate in heavy duty performance plus aesthetics, Orca leads the industry with our galvanized ductile iron range of drainage solutions. • The new BP & Maccas site on Doherty’s Road in Derrimut features our patented Griptech grates over precast pits. Designed for improved pedestrian, vehicle and mobility aid safety, Griptech is one of the only grating products on the market that offers a P5 slip rating in both directions. The Griptech design features a 5mm bar for heel and wheel safety, combined with anti-slip nodules for a slip resistant surface. Our Griptech profile design ensures that high heels can safely travel over the grate without tripping, wheelchairs and bicycle wheels won’t fall into grate voids and vehicles can travel over the grates with ease, in any weather condition. The range features a bolt down security system plus the ability to remove for easy maintenance access. Available in stainless steel and galvanized steel options to meet the design loads and safety requirements of any project. • Womersley’s Mitre 10 can be traced back to Jack Womersley, one of the founding members of the Mitre 10 group in 1959. The Sorrento business was bought by the family in 2004 and is run by Jack’s grandsons Stuart, Peter Womersley & scott womersley.    Orca was involved in their recent relocation and updates to the store that included our polymer concrete drainage channels, paired with our grates. Orca’s channels deliver up to three times the compressive strength of conventional concrete products and are made locally at our Melbourne plant, to European Standard EN1433:2002, using recycled glass feedstock that’s been diverted from landfill, in lieu of virgin quarried materials.  The job was installed by McDonald Plumbing in Rosebud and involved about 20 metres of customised trench grates on the driveways, with pits and customised grates in the timber yard plus our SH100 channels with stainless steel grates & edges installed as a threshold grates. The stainless steel grates feature our patented Griptech™ anti-slip profile that offers a P5 slip rating in both directions. • The WINX stand at Royal Randwick racetrack opened last year, as a two-storey state-of-the-art trackside facility for general admission racegoers. Orca drainage products feature in the project with over 100 metres of our CV200 on display in these pics in ductile iron (right) and stainless steel (left).   The Orca CV200 ductile edge rail drainage system is manufactured to European Standard EN1433:2002, Orca’s ductile iron grates are manufactured to AS3996:2019 and load rated to Class E. These grates are suitable for heavy duty loading and feature Orca’s heelguard design, to ensure vehicles, pedestrians and mobility aids and even vehicles can travel comfortably and safely over the grate surface. Our ductile iron grating range is the ideal choice for any installation that requires high performing drainage solutions.    Our stainless steel products also feature in this installation as threshold grates at the lounge entrance and meet the brief for both performance and aesthetics. This range features integrated stainless steel edge rails with our patented Griptech™ anti-slip system, plus Orca’s heelguard attribute to prevent trip hazards. They’re load rated to Class B and carry a P5 slip rating. View the full range https://lnkd.in/gCEPXbdu #grating #griptech #orca

Victoria’s CDS (Container Deposit Scheme) launched last week with hundreds of reverse vending machines, depots and over the counter locations across the state redeeming eligible used drink containers (cans, bottles and cartons) for 10 cents each.   This initiative is designed to reduce litter, but it also has positive implications for businesses like ours that use recycled glass in our civil and infrastructure products. At Orca we replace virgin quarried sand in our polymer concrete products with recycled glass feedstock from Australia’s waste stream.   During our years of producing traffic management products and drainage solutions featuring recycled content, we’ve experienced challenges in sourcing suitable recycled glass in continuous supply. Initiatives like the CDS are likely to increase the proportion of glass packaging that’s recycled (which currently sits at 56%), reduce the 500+ kilotons going to landfill in Australia each year and, potentially create a broader scope of readily available recycled glass feedstock for local manufacturers to access.   For more about our products https://lnkd.in/gCQ3YePH Pics: courtesy TOMRA Cleanaway & Awm #recycledcontent #localmanufacturing #orca

With 19% of our emissions generated by the transport sector & 20.1million passenger vehicles currently registered in Australia, the Climate Council is urging us to consider alternative, lower impact modes of transport. In Melbourne, half of all our weekday car trips less than 4.7km and in Sydney 2 million car trips per day are less than 2km.   Urban planning may be the key to persuading us, with the UN now calling on countries to invest at least 20% of their transport budgets on walking & bike infrastructure. Link this to the recent Monash Uni study on barriers to bike riding in Melbourne and our lack of separated bicycle infrastructure was high on the list. With 93% of Melbourne’s cycling infrastructure currently in the form of narrow on-road painted lanes, an investment in separated bike lanes may just encourage more pedal power. This Australia wide initiative launched this month and allows cyclists to have their say about safety on our roads. An interactive map allows every Australian to be part of the largest ever crowd sourcing bike safety project. Governments are increasingly promoting more active transport methods to reduce traffic congestion and improve the social, economic and environmental health of our communities. Encouraging people is key, with Monash Uni finding that over 75% of people interested in riding a bike, will only do so when physically separated from cars and currently the vast majority of our bike lanes are narrow on-road painted lanes. You can be part of this great initiative by heading to bikespot.org to drop a pin and answer a few questions about specific bike lane locations. Data will be collected from the platform in January 2024 and shared with local government and other organisations involved in road design. https://lnkd.in/gtKubQC2 #roadsafety #infrastructure #cyclists #orca
