OZEX tip for the day: As Telstra's 3G service coverage comes to an end on the 31st August, it seems that it'll significantly impact mobile coverage in remote areas. No more finding a hill and going up the top to get 1 bar of signal!
I haven't found a reliable GIS layer for Telstra's coverage (anyone?) but I've been using an trick shown to me by a geologist who wasn't GIS savvy - registering images in Google Earth.
In this instance, I've screenshotted the area of coverage (from Telstra's coverage map on their website) I was interested in, saved it as a JPG and imported it into Google Earth. Then you simply stretch it around until it matches the base map, and export it as a KML - georeferenced. Fast and effective.
In this instance, I'd compared the 3G network coverage to the 4G coverage - it'll impact some areas a lot more than others.
Not great news, especially off the back of the Thuraya T3 satellite failure...
Has anyone heard if Telstra has a plan to increase the reach of the 4G network?
