Why is childhood anxiety an issue? What impact does it have on children's wellbeing? One of the key things that's become apparent over the last couple of years is that anxiety gets better or worse as a result of the interactions that children have with adults around them. There's normal anxiety, which everybody experiences, and then there's anxiety disorders. What is concerning about this is that anxiety disorders tend to grow when not treated. At 11-years-old, about seven per cent of kids have an anxiety disorder. By the time they're 15, that number has risen to 11 per cent, if not treated. By the time they are 18, that childhood anxiety disorder has grown to over 18 per cent, if not treated. Since we know that childhood anxiety disorders grow when not treated, we can safely assume that normal anxiety tends to grow through childhood and into teenage years as well. This means that anxieties will not go away when being ignored. We need to address them and help children all over Australia overcome their life challenges.

The Children’s Week is starting today, from Saturday 19 to Sunday 27 October 2024. Events across the state will celebrate the talents, skills, and rights of children. Children’s Week is annually celebrated in Australia and engages children and their families in activities, projects and events staged at numerous locations, including schools, childcare centres, parks, playgroups, libraries, and cultural and community groups. This year’s theme is ‘Children have the right to a clean and safe environment’. For children and young people, the right to a clean environment is essential in nurturing their growth and development. Clean air, safe and secure surroundings, and outlets for physical activity play a role in how they interact with and understand the world around them. Discover more at childrensrightsqld.org.au

Last week was World Mental Health Day 2024 and we want to remind everyone how crucial a healthy work environment is for your well-being. If you are having a tough day at work, remember: Your are not alone. If you are having a good day at work, remember: You can help others to have the same. Supporting good mental health will contribute to a healthier, more productive workplace and supporting good mental health in educators and family support workers will improve the well-being of the young people they work with as well. Allowing yourself to prioritise mental health is never selfish; it is beneficial for your work, your mindset, and everyone around you.
