Yesterday, Perth South West was fortunate to have the opportunity to bring together the Mayors and CEOs from the region with Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles to discuss the critical infrastructure needs tied to AUKUS. With the announcement that morning of the planned defence precinct in Henderson, it was the perfect time to discuss how important it is for our region to be prosperous and liveable in order to ensure AUKUS’ success. We covered a broad range of topics including road upgrades, service infrastructure, improved communications, housing plans, and community engagement. The Deputy PM was very receptive to the issues raised, and we look forward to an ongoing dialogue as we work towards solutions that support our region’s growth and future opportunities. #AUKUS #defence #westerntradecoast

Jobs, infrastructure, investment and growth for Cockburn residents and businesses. These are the benefits that excite the City of Cockburn as we welcome the Federal Government’s historic establishment of a Commonwealth-owned Defence Precinct at Henderson. This much-needed development will allow the Henderson shipbuilding precinct to reach its potential as WA prepares to meet the demands of the AUKUS submarine pathway. It will begin with an initial three-year $127m federally-funded planning phase to establish infrastructure including common user facilities to support shipbuilding and sustainment industries in the area. Here’s why it’s good for Cockburn: - Sustainment and maintenance of defence and navy projects at Henderson will create about 3,000 jobs✔️ - Thousands more jobs will support the precinct’s construction and related expansion at HMAS Stirling worth tens of billions of dollars over the next two decades✔️ - It will further increase local businesses involved in the defence supply chain✔️ - Increased export opportunities for local businesses✔️ - A flow-on effect for servicing and maintenance of larger defence and commercial vessels✔️ - Increased opportunities for ancillary businesses like food, accommodation and retail✔️ - Training opportunities in fields such as analytics and robotics, and hopefully a catalyst for expansion of locally-available TAFE courses✔️ - It’s in keeping with Cockburn Council’s 2023 endorsement of a defence and maritime blue economy innovation hub in Henderson✔️ “The multiplier effects will be far-reaching,” Mayor Logan Howlett said. “As a City we are determined to help support our community adjust to the changes ahead as we prepare for the arrival of US submarines in WA in 2027, with their maintenance relying on expertise and facilities not only in Henderson but the wider Cockburn area.” More: https://ow.ly/RjNs50TNfRN #HendersonDefencePrecinct #CityOfCockburn #EconomicDevelopment #BlueEconomy

Front page of today's The West Australian puts it simply, that WA, particularly Perth's South West region, is Australia's home of AUKUS. While there are thousands of jobs to be created through announcements such as this, there is a need for planned infrastructure upgrades over the coming years to ensure that the region can meet Defence's aspirations. #AUKUS #Westport #WesternTradeCoast #FutureofFremantle #ContinuousShipbuilding #Megaprojects

Earlier this week, the Alliance had the pleasure of hosting the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works during their visit to Rockingham. We discussed critical infrastructure needs, including the urgent requirement for upgrades to support the growing operations at HMAS Stirling related to AUKUS. Road works to provide immediate relief to the network are required as a priority, but a comprehensive solution is essential. We're calling on the Federal Government to commit to resolving the long-term access to Australia's largest naval base. This isn't just a local issue—it's a national priority.

2025 is set to be a big year in WA with elections at all tiers of government planned. With megaprojects like #AUKUS and #Westport planned for Perth's South West region, our success is closely linked to our State and Australia's prosperity. While there is plenty that needs to be done, our two headline asks are: An Infrastructure Partnership Agreement that encompasses all three tiers of government to schedule, fund and deliver the infrastructure planned in a coordinated manner that maximises uplift in our communities, environment and local economy. and Establishing a State Government Parliamentary Secretary for the Perth South West Region to work across portfolios to coordinate efforts across government departments, portfolios and agencies.

Director Perth South West Metropolitan Alliance

The Perth South West Metropolitan Alliance met recently with AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles’s leadership, including Jenny Krusoe (EVP & COO) and Jade Clemons (BlueSEA Director). AltaSea, a 35-acre campus, is a global leader in marine innovation, focusing on regenerative aquaculture, renewable energy, and blue technology. AltaSea’s “Deep Blue Decade” initiative aligns with our goals of fostering sustainable economic development. Their unique partnerships and commitment to equity demonstrate how public-private collaboration can drive innovation in the blue economy. Insights from this meeting will help shape our region's approach to marine sustainability and the blue economy. What I was particularly impressed with was how they worked closely with thier onsite partners, including a business support group to help the start ups (such a smart idea), as well as innovators in 3D concrete printing and sustainable surfboard manufacturing. A campus like this would do a lot for moving WA's blue economy aspirations forward.
