Carn The Bloods!!! The mighty Peter Mac Bloods football team have defended their title and gone back-to-back in the 2024 Medical Research Institute Cup! The team defeated sides from WEHI and the St Vincent's Institute to secure this year’s prize at windy Western Oval in Parkville. They were led to victory by Peter Mac researchers and coaches Patrick Crock, Hugh Chalmers and Will Tobin. “It was a huge thrill to go back to back!” Patrick said. “The day is a great opportunity to meet researchers from different organisations as well as getting to know staff from Peter Mac in a different way." Tahli, mum of two, describes CAR-T cell therapy as her miracle. For her, the life-saving cancer treatment by researchers at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, including A/Prof Jane Oliaro and team, has been nothing short of remarkable. Here is Tahli and Jane's story and why supporting the full costs of research is pivotal to keeping the foundations of our Victorian medical research institutes strong so they may continue their vital work. Professor Geoffrey Lindeman and Professor Jane Visvader have jointly received one of the world’s oldest science prizes from the UK’s The Royal Society. Profs Lindeman and Visvader are Joint Head of the Breast Cancer Laboratory at the WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research) in Melbourne. As a clinician-scientist, Prof Lindeman is also a medical oncologist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and The Royal Melbourne Hospital. They are recognised for their discoveries around breast stem and progenitor cells, which have supported new approaches to breast cancer treatment and prevention. “We are cognisant that science is very much a ‘team sport’, and that this award really recognises a stellar team of devoted scientists and colleagues and patient advocates, who we have been fortunate to work with over the last 25 years,” they said in a joint statement on Wednesday. Peter Mac's Professor Kieran Harvey helped discover the ‘Hippo’ signalling pathway 20 years ago. He's spent his career trying to understand more about how this ancient pathway controls organ growth and how we can target it to treat mesothelioma - a devastating #cancer that has few effective treatments and a very poor prognosis. There are currently five treatments being tested in early clinical trials that target the Hippo pathway and most of these are being trialled as mesothelioma treatments, because the Hippo pathway is the driving force behind this particular cancer. “These new treatments work by inhibiting TEAD, a type of protein that helps control organ growth, however people will likely develop resistance to the treatment so we have been researching ways to stop this from occurring,” Prof Harvey explains.
