  • Phoenix is delivering Safe & Together CORE Model training in November for a heavily discounted price. Please contact Jay at training@phoenix.asn.au for more information. #familyanddomesticviolence #childprotection #trauma #perpetratoraccountability

Here are five frontline tips for child welfare workers based on the Safe & Together Model for recognizing the intersection of suicidality with domestic abuse & danger: 1. Focus on the perpetrator's pattern of behavior as the source of harm to children and family functioning, rather than blaming the survivor. Assess how the perpetrator's actions impact child safety, well-being, and family stability. 2. Partner with the adult survivor to understand their protective efforts and strengths as a parent. Validate the survivor's efforts to keep their children safe and support their parenting, rather than holding them responsible for the perpetrator's choices. 3. Engage with fathers/perpetrators as parents and hold them accountable for their abusive behaviors. Have high standards and expectations for them as parents to change their harmful patterns. 4. Take a holistic, comprehensive approach to assessing the intersections of domestic violence with other issues like substance abuse and mental health. Consider how the perpetrator's behaviors may be causing, exacerbating, or interfering with treatment for these issues. 5. Use domestic violence-informed documentation that clearly describes the perpetrator's harmful patterns and their impacts, as well as the survivor's protective efforts. Avoid victim-blaming language or mutualizing the abuse. By implementing these strategies, child welfare workers can more effectively identify and address the complex interplay between domestic violence and suicidality. This approach not only enhances the safety of survivors and children but also holds perpetrators accountable for their actions. Remember, a domestic violence-informed perspective is crucial in accurately assessing risk and providing appropriate interventions in these challenging cases. Stay informed, stay compassionate, and always prioritize the safety and well-being of the families you serve. #ChildWelfare #DomesticViolence #SafeAndTogether #MentalHealth

The AFP is providing the travel plans of convicted Australian child sex offenders to overseas policing partners through INTERPOL to help protect vulnerable children from sex predators. Travel details of Australians listed on the National Child Offenders System are assessed by the AFP as they pass through Australian international airports. The AFP then provides those details to INTERPOL if the country the offenders are travelling to is a potential target for predators, or the country has requested to be informed. INTERPOL Green Notices are a key process used to warn global partners about serious offenders who are likely to travel, and they assist international law enforcement in protecting their communities. Green Notices cover a variety of serious criminal offences, but 94 per cent of them from Australia are related to child sex offenders. Australia currently has more than 900 active Green Notices listed with INTERPOL, which is the third-most of any country in the world. The AFP is committed to working with our partners to combat the abuse of children anywhere in the world, through every means at our disposal.
