Had an awesome time catching up with some of the Playa Power team in Melbourne 🙌 Every athlete’s story is unique, so we love meeting in person to build strong connections, hear their stories, understand their goals, and give them the support they need to build the brand THEY want. ⚡️ Jeremy Boyce - A Pararoo who wants to use his brand to help grow the profile of his sport and make money to support his dreams. ⚡️ Stacey Hymer – Taekwondo Olympian, focused on building her network and understanding how it can help her entrepreneurial goals beyond sport. ⚡️ Beth Pinchin - AFLW player going through her third ACL rehab who wants to share her journey to inspire others. She also wants to better understand how to build her brand to support her in and beyond the game. These guys are smashing it and we can’t wait to help with the exciting things they’ve got coming up 💪

Last week, we hit the road for workshops with Richmond Football Club and Fremantle Dockers AFLW teams, diving into personal branding and storytelling ⚡️ It was an amazing opportunity to connect with these athletes in person and answer their questions about personal branding, growing on social media, and how to tell their unique stories. We had each player write down their brand pillars and share with the group, which sparked great conversations about how their brand goes beyond just being an AFLW player. So often we hear from athletes that they lack support in this area, so it was fantastic to see their energy and enthusiasm to learn more throughout the workshop. A huge thank you to both clubs and their wellbeing managers, Amelia Todhunter and Liana Nici, for inviting us in and supporting their athletes education to grow off the field! 🙌 If any clubs are interested in similar workshops, feel free to reach out - we’d love to connect! NBA Stars Steph Curry, DeMar DeRozan, and Jayson Tatum are proving there’s more to athlete branding than just game-day performance. Each has entered the publishing world, proving how athletes can build deeper, more authentic connections with their audiences through storytelling and personal experiences: ⚡️ Stephen Curry’s children’s book, I Am Extraordinary, is all about teaching confidence and embracing uniqueness - perfectly in line with his mission to empower the next generation. ⚡️DeMar DeRozan's memoir, Above The Noise, opens up a conversation about mental health and his own struggles with depression. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of well-being, especially for athletes. ⚡️Jayson Tatum brings a family-focused approach with Baby Dunks-a-Lot, a children’s book inspired by his son, Deuce. These moves show us the importance of supporting athletes in growing their brands while addressing mental health and social impact. Athletes aren’t just role models on the court—they’re driving real change off it, and this creates new opportunities for meaningful partnerships and lasting impact. #NBA #AthleteBranding #SportsMarketing

We're witnessing the rise of the athlete-creator 🚀 Notice nailed their breakdown of how athletes are evolving into powerful brand and media entities. Athletes like Bailey Smith , Reece Walsh and Chloe Molloy have higher social followings than their clubs, showing the shift in where audience attention and influence lies 👀 Platforms like Instagram, Youtube, newsletters and podcasts enable athletes to bypass traditional media, connect directly with their audiences, and leverage their platforms to land brand partnerships and new business ventures. Athletes aren't just athletes - they’re founders, creators, and industry leaders. Playa Power was created to help athletes seize these opportunities by empowering them to take control of their digital platforms and maximise their influence.
The influence of athletes in Australia and across the globe is rising, signalled by many having significant social media followings that are often larger than the teams they play for, or the leagues and bodies that govern them. Some examples of current and ex-athletes on Instagram worth noticing: Bailey Smith 328k Western Bulldogs 199k Christian Petracca 474k Melbourne FC 161k Dustin Martin 325k Richmond FC 316k Reece Walsh 536k Brisbane Broncos 541k Josh Addo Carr 328k Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 261k Nathan Cleary 416k Penrith Panthers 317k Helen Housby 191k NSW Swifts 77k Emma McKeon 250k Swimming Australia 56k Ellyse Perry 2.7m Aussie Women's Cricket Team 251k Chloe Molloy 24k Sydney Swans AFLW 18k Erin Phillips 71k Port Adelaide Women's 20k Matthew Dellavedova 358k Melbourne United 64k --- The changing sports media landscape Digital platforms allow athletes to build & maintain their personal brands online and connect directly with fans, bypassing traditional media and team communications. Social media and podcasts are popular platforms for athletes to promote their personalities and lifestyles. Newsletters are also emerging as a new platform of choice - NBA star Kyle Kuzma launched his "Kuz Kontrol" newsletter to share his life with fans More on the rise of the sports creator economy here: https://lnkd.in/gtSb7waD --- Athletes are commercialising their followings in multiple ways, such as: 1. Landing significant brand partnerships "Brand Petracca" has received a lot of (unfortunately negative) coverage from media lately but his business-savviness should be applauded. His recipe-focused Instagram has allowed him to follow a passion and generate revenue via brand partnerships that include My Protein, Cobram Estate, YoPro, Primo, Continental, Woolworths. 2. Launching start-ups Nathan Clearly is a part-owner of Drink West, a beer brand founded by UFC Fighter's Tai Tuivasa and Tyson Pedro. Bailey Smith founded Alter Ego Drinks and recruited Reece Walsh, Nick & Josh Diacos, and Charlie Curnow to be involved. --- The benefits of the rising influence of athletes also flows through to teams, leagues and sports as star athletes help attract attention and draw new fans. This is most evident in global sports and at the extreme end where superstars such Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi attract mass-attention and commercial returns wherever they go (team or platform). Cristiano Ronaldo just launched a YouTube channel and attracted 20m subscribers in 1 day. In the first year of Lionel Messi arriving Inter Miami CF saw its revenue more than double to $118m and its valuation surge 72% to $1.03b. --- Business are emerging to facilitate the rise in athlete influence. Start-ups like Playa Power educate and empower athletes to reach their full potential in the world of digital marketing & media. Turnstile helps brands determine the value of athlete IP. #sportsmarketing

This is crazy 🤯 Travis and Jason Kelce just signed a deal for their Podcast worth more over 3 years than they’ve made playing NFL! Less than 100 episodes and the show already has over 11M social media followers. The power of athlete creators and their ability to connect with audience is unmatched! #athletebrand #personalbranding #athletedeals #contentcreator
The Kelce brothers just signed a $100M podcast deal with Amazon’s podcast network, Wondery. The New Heights podcast is only two seasons old, and has less than 100 episodes in total, but this deal is worth more money over three years than either brother made during their NFL career 🤯 The rise of the athlete creator signals a new era in sports media where athletes have the power to not just tell their stories, but to monetise them on their terms. This is a game-changer for the industry, showing that authentic, athlete-driven content is the future. This powerful statement from Dan Haesler during this weeks NRL and Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) National Wellbeing & Education Conference that resonates deeply with us at Playa Power.
