I have travelled a lot since last year and still have many photos and stories to share. Here are some snapshots from a special end of life doula training day hosted by Karin Koulianas in South Australia last year. Several of our SA doulas attended to learn more about shrouds. Every doula wrote the name of their business outside. A shroud is a cloth used to wrap a body after death. In some states, it can be used in cremation and burial instead of a coffin. It can be used to wrap your person with gentle dignity and respect and then placed inside a coffin. It is an environmentally friendly alternative to some traditional burial methods. Its National Carers Week this week and I wanted to take a moment to honour, thank and acknowledge ALL those providing care and support to others who are advancing in age, living with a life-limiting or terminal diagnosis, living with mental health or disability challenges and any other care needs. Having lived as a full time live in carer with my dad for a few months up to his death and then for 7 years with my mum (picture of mum and I below) as she lived with dementia this; is a cause close to my heart. Many carer's live with great losses, (eg: career, $, opportunities, social isolation, friendships, time out, social events, friendships to name only a few) - these losses often unrecognised. Carers often relate to themselves as 'just a carer'. Truly indicative of the stigma and social rejection many experience. Carers often forego their primary relationship with the person they are caring for because they 'become' the 'carer' rather than the wife, son, daughter, partner, child, friend, lover, husband and many other relationship manifestations. Carers often bear the brunt of the changes in their person's attitudes, behaviours, needs and demands. Carers often cannot get the support from services that they need and / or are promised by conventional care systems who struggle with not enough people to fill the demand for services. Please reach out to people you know who are care-givers whether short or long term. They need and deserve our care, support and championing. As a doula, one of the things we have our attention on when working with families and those close to someone approaching end of life or advancing in age is the wellbeing of care-givers. Doulas promote self care and well being. Doulas can recognise and engage principles of early intervention, harm reduction and prevention. October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and today, 15 October, we remember the little ones that we hold in our hearts but no longer in our arms. We often discuss end of life in terms of older people or those with a life-limiting illness, but it can come anytime.
