About us
PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia) is the peak registration body for tertiary-qualified counsellors and psychotherapists. PACFA is a proud full/'ordinary' member of Allied Health Professionals Australia (AHPA) and a qualifying member of National Alliance of Self-Regulating Health Professionals (NASRHP). PACFA has more than 8000 members across Australia with 33% in regional/rural and remote areas. Twenty-eight per cent (28%) work with young people, and 17% work with children. Just over half of PACFA members work in private practice, often alongside Psychologists, General Practitioners and other Allied Health professionals. Other members are employed at schools, by service providers and by different levels of government. Counsellors work with clients to: • Gain greater understanding of themselves and others • Manage change and resolve identified concerns • Explore aspects of identity, spirituality and past experiences • Build self-awareness and change behaviour • Address grief and loss, trauma, domestic violence or use of alcohol and other substances • Intervene early to support enhanced relationships with family and community PACFA’s registration requirements are rigorous, and the highest in the sector. PACFA registrants work within our Scope of Practice and are accountable to our Code of Ethics and grievance resolution procedures. PACFA registrants receive rebates and referrals through a wide range of services including private health insurance, workers compensation, victim support services and health services. At PACFA we have been concerned about the potential harm caused by unqualified, under-qualified, un-regulated and poorly regulated therapists for many years. This UK article captures some of these risks that are even more applicable here in Australia than in the UK. Counselling and psychotherapy are inherently ‘low-risk’ activities, but this does not equate to ‘no risk’. The Australian community deserve to be able to confidently access a highly skilled and expert counselling and psychotherapy workforce that meets the same level of training as other Allied Health professions. We are very pleased to be working with the Australian Government on the National Standards for Counselling and Psychotherapy to address this longstanding issue and hope that together we can ensure greater safety and transparency for vulnerable Australians in the future. https://lnkd.in/g2h3-54V

Verbal and Physical Work in Psychosomatic Psychotherapy PACFA College of Psychotherapy: Somatic Modality 14 October 2024 (online event) Verbal psychotherapies work with the understanding that experiences, beliefs, thoughts and defences are in the brain, whereas body-oriented psychotherapy has the understanding that all these phenomena are also registered in the body. Functional Analysis, an in-depth psychosomatic psychotherapy, is based on the understanding that body mind and emotions are three forms of the same thing, just as ice steam and water are three forms of a common underlying reality. This approach is characterised by the combination of verbal work and physical work. PACFA CPD: Equine-assisted Creative Arts Therapy. Tuesday 1 October 2024 - 7:00pm - 8:30pm (AEST). PACFA's College of Creative and Experiential Therapies is pleased to invite you this online PD presented by Rebekah Popescu. Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) and creative arts therapy (CAT) are distinct experiential models of psychotherapy. As both are built on principles of cultivating awareness and insight from phenomenological observations, the herd and the art can be potent agents of change when experienced coactively. EAP is a specialised approach, supporting clients of all ages with horses as co-facilitators and co-regulators. https://lnkd.in/gnK6w6Wt #PACFA #PACFACPD #CPD #CCET #Psychotherapy #Counselling
