Big companies have taken advantage of gaps in consumer protection for too long. We urgently need to ban unfair trading practices to protect consumers from hidden fees and from being charged for services they've tried to cancel. Redfern Legal Centre has long advocated for an economy-wide prohibition on unfair trade practices. We welcome this announcement and hope to see these new laws passed as soon as possible.

The more interactions a person has with police, the more likely they will end up in the criminal justice system. The over-policing of First Nations children and young people leads to their over-incarceration. This not only fails to meet Australia’s international obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, but also undermines the aspirations outlined in the Closing the Gap Report. RLC welcomes the Government’s announcement of new telecommunications protections for customers experiencing domestic and family violence. This industry standard will raise the bar for the telco industry and ensure victim survivors can stay connected when they need it most and access appropriate support from their telco provider. This follows years of advocacy by RLC’s Financial Abuse Service and members of the Economic Abuse Reference Group, as the telco industry has fallen short in regulating itself and preventing the misuse of telco services by perpetrators. We look forward to continuing to work with the Government and industry to ensure telcos act responsibly and meet the needs of victim survivors. More below:

It is common sense that we must put an end to the widespread practice of subjecting young people to the invasive and traumatic experience of strip searches. This practice doesn’t make them safer; in fact, it encourages risky behavior, and most of the time, nothing is found. Thank you to everyone who wrote letters to the The Sydney Morning Herald in support of our campaign.

Boarding houses are one form of affordable housing in Sydney - a city where housing, particularly in Inner Sydney, is unaffordable for so many people. Residents of Boarding Houses should be protected by better planning policies that cannot easily be circumnavigated by developers.

Sean Stimson, Senior Solicitor at our International Student Legal Service, in the Guardian about the systemic issues contributing to the housing crisis and the unfair scapegoating of international students.
Claims that international students are the ‘modern version of the boat arrivals’ are inflammatory and unhelpful | Sean Stimson
