This week, we joined with 70+ refugee, legal, human rights and faith-based organisations to write to the Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, urging the Government to take immediate action to provide pathways to permanency for all those failed by the former Coalition government’s ‘Fast Track’ system. The peak body for refugees, people seeking asylum and the organisations that work with them in Australia.
About us
The Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) is the national umbrella body for refugees and the organisations and individuals who support them. RCOA speaks up for flexible, humane and practical policies towards refugees, asylum seekers and displaced persons, within Australia and internationally. It does this through national and international research; policy analysis; representation; training; and community education. A non-profit organisation with tax-deductible charity status, RCOA is funded through public donations, fees from its organisational and individual members, by foundations and through project work. The priority activities for RCOA are set by its members, as represented by an elected Board. The organisation’s policy and research work is informed by a constant process of consultation – convening regional forums and national teleconferences, attending interagency gatherings and meeting regularly with organisations and individuals across Australia. RCOA has Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, enabling it to take the concerns of refugees to a wide range of UN gatherings, particularly those convened by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

This weekend SSI had the pleasure of supporting the Rural Australians for Refugees at their national conference held at Victoria’s beautiful Kyneton. RAR is a grassroots movement of volunteers who work to support refugees and people seeking asylum. I was honoured to meet behrouz boochani, keynote and leading human rights campaigner and Jean Ker Walsh, from the Macedon Ranges chapter. SSI’s Lily Jiang presented on SSI’s Activate Australia’s Skills campaign and Lida Hazara Nayeeb spoke of her work supporting women and girls in Afghanistan. It was a wonderful turnout and good to see and hear SSI friends Zaki Haidari and Louise Olliff Oliff Refugee Council of Australia. #rural#refugees Violet Roumeliotis AM Yamamah Agha Sandy Fitter Sonia Vignjevic Dor Akech Achiek Amitabh Rajouria Maggie Brickwood Dane Moores Hannah Gartrell

We welcome news that temporary Humanitarian visas are being issued to Palestinian and Israeli families in Australia on short-term visas. However, we urge the Government to establish a plan to ensure a pathway to permanency is provided well before these three-year visas expire. Read our media release: https://lnkd.in/g4eHbTKN

The Refugee Council of Australia strongly supports Australia's collaboration in initiating steps towards taking the Taliban to the International Court of Justice for gender discrimination. By joining Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands in this groundbreaking move, Australia is taking a powerful stand against the Taliban's oppressive policies, including the recent ban on women’s voices in public and barring girls from education beyond age 11. This legal action sends a clear message: the global community will not tolerate gender discrimination.

BREAKING: The first humanitarian visas for Palestinian families fleeing Gaza have been granted. We're seeking clarity from the Australian Government, Palestinian communities in Australia, and our member organisations on what impact this will have on those from Gaza in Australia.
