We’re proud to have commenced a new project with the Centre for Community Child Health at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI), on the outcomes for children and families of prevention and early intervention initiatives for children in their early years. Since 2015, we’ve delivered our ‘early matters’ prevention and early intervention service in the Ballarat City Council and the Brimbank City Council. Our ongoing evaluations demonstrate the significant benefits of this program for parents and the community. Key outcomes include improved parental confidence, increased access to support, greater social and emotional awareness, and reduced behaviour concerns. Our new, collaborative project with MCRI aims to improve outcomes for children and families by leveraging our experience in delivering ‘early matters’, and informing our future services for children and young people. How can you engage men to change using trauma-informed strategies? That’s what we’ll be discussing when we facilitate a pre-conference workshop at the No to Violence National Conference 2024 in Melbourne this Monday 2 September. We know how important it is for children, young people and families to have access to whole-of-family early intervention and prevention services. That’s why we’re working across Victoria to strengthen families, support healthy relationships, promote mental health and wellbeing, and prevent family violence. Our focus is on supporting clients with challenges they’re facing now, but also helping them to build skills and knowledge that will support them in the future. Similarly, a new Australian Human Rights Commission report calls for prevention and early intervention to stop our most vulnerable children from coming into contact with the child justice system. The Commission spoke with 150 young people and children, their families and a range of stakeholders who said that prioritising child wellbeing and safety would help keep children away from the criminal justice system. The report calls for governments to listen to the evidence and work together across health, education, social services and justice to improve child wellbeing and safety – and keep communities safe for everyone.
