TOP 3 STRATEGIES FOR TEACHERS TO DE-ESCALATE AND HANDLE MELTDOWNS IN CHILDREN WITH ASD PROVIDE PERSONAL SPACE AND SENSORY TOOLS Action: Allow the child space to calm down, avoiding physical contact unless necessary. Offer sensory items like noise-canceling headphones or fidget toys to help them self-regulate. Why It Works: Sensory tools provide grounding and reduce sensory overload, while personal space prevents the child from feeling trapped. USE NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION Action: Communicate calmly with gestures or visual aids instead of verbal commands during the meltdown. Keep a neutral and open demeanour. Why It Works: Nonverbal cues are less overwhelming and help the child process instructions in a stressful moment. IMPLEMENT VISUAL SCHEDULES AND PREDICTABILITY Action: Use a visual schedule to outline the day’s activities and provide warnings before transitions. This offers structure and reduces anxiety. Why It Works: Predictability helps children with ASD feel secure and reduces the likelihood of meltdowns triggered by unexpected changes. These strategies respect the child's needs while being easy for teachers to apply in busy classrooms.

TCI IESCAPE Method to Help Children with Disabilities Replace Challenging Behaviours ♿🇦🇺 IESCAPE IESCAPE is an acronym representing a method used in the Life Space Interview model. It helps teach children with disabilities to replace challenging behaviours with more positive ones. I - Isolate Isolate the conversation to where the child feels comfortable, safe and can openly express themselves. E - Explore Explore the child's perspective to understand why they are engaging in the challenging behaviour, which might be linked to issues beyond the current situation. S - Summarise Summarise the child's feelings and main points, then ask, 'Have I got this right?' Repeat until the child confirms you understand them. C - Connect Link behaviour to feelings, such as saying, 'You were angry and upset, so you threw a chair at the wall’. A - Alternative Discuss alternative behaviours with the child, like 'Instead of throwing a chair, you could go for a short walk.' This works best when you collaborate on the alternative behaviour. P - Practice Practice the new behaviour together, ensuring the child learns and completes the more constructive action. E - Enter Enter the child back into their normal routine.

Understanding the CBT Triangle 🔺 The CBT Triangle is a concept in cognitive-behavioural therapy that illustrates the connection between: Thoughts: Beliefs about ourselves, other people and the world. CBT helps to identify and challenge negative thoughts. Feelings: Emotions are affected by our thoughts. Transforming thought patterns can change emotional responses. Behaviours: Actions are influenced by thoughts and feelings. Through addressing negative patterns of thoughts, the cascading affect is a change maladaptive/negative behaviours. For individuals with disabilities, the CBT Triangle can be a valuable tool/framework to understanding and assist in addressing some challenging behaviours. By examining the interplay between thoughts, feelings, and actions, we can better identify triggers and develop more effective strategies to manage and support positive behavioural change.
