𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 We know what good coaches look like and what they do. But first, let's dispel two myths about coaching: 🔸 Good coaching is about having to have all the answers. 🔸 Being a good coach is about being a good advice giver. These are false. ______________ Video on coaching here: https://lnkd.in/emx_j6y4 ______________ Think of coaching in terms of two major kinds of coaching situations: 1. There are coaching situations that you initiate. This is because you want to pass on some information that will help the person on your team. 2. There are situations where the person comes to you. They want to talk about something troubling them—some issue, some problem, some challenge they’re having. For the sake of brevity, let's discuss the second one; the person comes to you: 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 In all coaching situations, you want to frame the discussion. You hear very little about framing. To be effective, you must frame the conversation: 1. How much time do we have, 2. What are the ground rules for this discussion, 3. What are you hoping to get from this conversation, 4. What do you need from me? If you don't frame up the discussion, the coaching sessions drift and will go on and on, and nothing ever happens. The person needing the coaching doesn't take action or change. And the coach wasted their time. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 🔸 Indicate you are going to listen. Say, "Let’s take the time to really understand what’s going on as you see it.” 🔸 You want to understand why this is important and why the current situation isn't working 🔸 Think of it as the other person talking 75% of the time 🔸 Once you understand the situation, say, "Okay, so let’s move forward." This signals a switch 🔸 Ask, "If you could wave your magic wand, what would success look like?" 🔸 Watch the person's eyes. The person is moving his thoughts from the past to the future state. You're moving the person to the solution. 🔸 If the person is stuck, ask, "What would be occurring that is different from what’s happening now?” This helps them see the future state 🔸Once they explain the future state, ask, "What must YOU do to get there?" 🔸 Let them tell you how they will get there. They need to lay out the actions and plans. They need to take ownership. The big distinction between coaching and performance appraisal is that performance appraisal tends to look in the rearview mirror—the past. In contrast, coaching aims the discussion toward the future. It's a forward-looking perspective. Your job as the coach is to help the person make a better decision and implement that decision. While interviewing for a role in my team a few years back, Joseph Qiao, CPHR asked me what type of leader I am. I aspire to be a servant leader. I believe in the strength of the team, coaching them to bring out their best, and creating psychologically safety where everyone can provide truthful, open and honest feedback. I’m human, so I am a work in progress and don’t always get it right. What type of leader are you or do you aspire to be?

True leadership goes beyond metrics. Traditional leaders: 🔻 Prioritize themselves. 🔻 Don't listen to feedback. 🔻 Blame others for mistakes. 🔻 Measure success by numbers. 🔻 See leadership as a power play. Servant leaders: 🔹 Put their team's needs first, always. 🔹 Listen to connect and build trust. 🔹 Take responsibility for failures. 🔹 Value people over profits. 🔹 Create other leaders. So, how can you be that kind of leader? Here are 5 actionable steps to start: 1️⃣ Create a Safe Space: ▸ Make sure people feel safe to express themselves. 2️⃣ Promote Work-Life Balance: ▸ Support both personal and professional lives. 3️⃣ Provide Resources: ▸ Give the team the tools they need. 4️⃣ Practice Patience: ▸ Understand that growth and change take time. 5️⃣ Lead by Example: ▸ Be the leader you want your team to follow. Focus your attention where it matters most: Your team. Become a leader who inspires, empowers, and models servant leadership. ♻️ Repost this to help others, too.
