RISING : 01—16 June 2024
About us
RISING is a festival of new art, music and performance, in the heart of Naarm/Melbourne. When winter begins, 01—16 June 2024. Emerging from Melbourne’s roots, RISING is an annual festival that spills out onto the city streets, car parks, churches, town square and beloved venues. It’s a break from business as usual. A chance to connect as a city and with the ambitious artists who bring bold ideas that speak to this time and place.

VOTE FOR US: Friends and festival buddies, we need your help! We’re finalists in The Anthem Awards, the social impact arm of The Webbys, for two projects: First Peoples Melbourne Art Trams and mX RISING. In a special two-edition run dedicated to the arts, we got inky fingers reviving MX, Melbourne/Naarm’s favourite commuter paper for RISING. We also welcomed six incredible new First Peoples Melbourne Art Trams to the tracks. We did it because we believe the arts should be out there, freely available and entwined with the life of the city. As finalists, we’re also in the running for a publicly judged Community Voice Award! To get us over the line, follow the link, scroll to First Peoples Melbourne Art Trams and click 'celebrate’. https://lnkd.in/ev_kwhfz Voting closes Friday 1 November. Together we can shout about the arts louder than a Dickensian paperboy!

ILBIJERRI Theatre Company is on the road touring Big Name, No Blankets in prisons across Victoria and the Northern Territory, supported by The Balnaves Foundation. And the Butcher brothers’ story of Warumpi band is resonating with inmates. Rachael Maza, Ilbijerri Artistic Director: “The people inside are just so hungry for something beyond those four walls. For a moment, we transport them out of that place, and it’s such an incredible, joyful thing.” https://lnkd.in/gjCSJf7j Big Name, No Blankets, by Andrea James with Anyupa Butcher and Sammy Tjapanangka Butcher, has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Major Festivals Initiative, managed by Creative Australia, its arts funding and advisory body, in association with the Confederation of Australian International Arts Festivals Inc., commissioned by RISING, Sydney Festival, Darwin Festival, Brisbane Festival and Adelaide Festival. #firstnations #FirstPeoples #warumpiband

This Melbourne Art Tram is a tribute to the late artist Ellen José (Torres Strait Islander) and her work ‘Reach out and touch – distance and time’. As told by the artist, “Reach out and touch – distance and time emphasises the enduring impact of war on everyone involved, not just those on the frontlines but also their partners, children, families and friends back home.” The artwork highlights the 50th Anniversary of the Kokoda campaign in New Guinea. Search for Tram #3023 on the tramTRACKER app to find Ellen’s tram along routes 109 and 48. Curated by Jarra Steel (Boon Wurrung/Wemba Wemba) and presented by RISING in partnership with Public Transport Victoria, Yarra Trams and Creative Victoria. #ArtTrams2024 #FirstPeoples #FirstNations Joshua Toscano Department of Transport and Planning 📹: Breakfast Video

This Melbourne Art Tram titled ‘Arrears Window’ features the work of the late trailblazing First nations art icon Dr Destiny Deacon (Ku Ku/Erub Mer) – who is remembered as a pioneer of the Melbourne Urban Indigenous Art movement. The work offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of Melbourne’s public housing tower residents and uses evocative imagery to highlight the individual narratives and struggles within these communities. Destiny’s tram rides routes 1, 16 and 19. You can find it on the tramTRACKER app by searching Tram #5012. 🚃 Curated by Jarra Steel (Boon Wurrung/Wemba Wemba) and presented by RISING in partnership with Public Transport Victoria, Yarra Trams and Creative Victoria. #ArtTrams2024 #FirstPeoples #FirstNations Department of Transport and Planning 📹: Breakfast Video

RISING would like to acknowledge the sad passing of Kunmanara (Tiger) Yaltangki and send our condolences to his community, Iwantja Arts and all of those who loved him. We were honoured to have worked with Mr Yaltangki on the monumental work ROCK N ROLL for Shadow Spirit in 2023. His work brought so much joy with his brightly coloured paintings and love for rock and roll, bringing a smile to everyone’s faces through sharing his passion and his culture for all of us to connect too, he has left an incredible legacy.
