Taylor ‘Chip’ Hanson from Wollondilly Leisure Centre continues to make headlines! Earlier this year, Chip achieved his dream of becoming a qualified Teacher of Swimming & Water Safety and his inspiring story was recently featured in The Sunday Telegraph. Chip has formed a special bond with three-year-old Jagger, also living with Down Syndrome and is just starting his swimming journey under Chip’s guidance. Jagger’s mum, Ashleigh, says their connection in the pool is truly special. Last week, Chip also made history as the first person living with Down Syndrome to win Swim Teacher of the Year at the 2024 Aquatic and Recreation Institute (ARI NSW) Awards, receiving a standing ovation for his heartfelt acceptance speech. We’re excited to see Chip continue making a difference in his students’ lives. • Royal Life Saving – Australia along with RLSSQ is deeply concerned that over 40% of children are not meeting the National Benchmarks for swimming and water safety by the time they leave primary school. Many children are missing out on lessons, receiving too few lessons, or dropping out of swim programs altogether. The 2024 Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report revealed that the risk of drowning increases tenfold between the ages of 10 to 20. This is due to a clear decline in swimming, water safety, and lifesaving skills, combined with an increase in risk-taking activities. Many young adults are left unprepared for the dangers they may encounter in and around the water as they grow older. Without immediate action to address this skills gap, more lives could be at risk. Parents and carers play a critical role in their children's swimming and water safety education. We strongly recommend that children are enrolled in swimming lessons, or a program such as Swim and Survive, that adheres to the National Swimming and Water Safety Framework and assesses progress against the National Benchmarks.
