About us
RSL Australia is the nation’s largest Ex-Service Organisation representing more than 147,000 members. The League was founded in 1916 to ensure a unified approach to address the lack of organised repatriation facilities and medical services available to those returning from service in the Great War. This ethos of compassion and service remains today as the motivating influence of the League. Our core mission has never changed and has continued to evolve to meet the needs of each generation of servicemen and women. The League provides a sounding board for the Government in the development of policy. It contributes to reasoned public debate, public education, and increased public awareness of issues relating to the Veterans’ Affairs portfolio. The national office of the League is situated in Canberra. Whilst each State and Territory have a Branch Headquarters to serve the grassroots members of the League, the RSL national office's role is to coordinate and promote the national interests of the organisation, making representations to Parliamentarians, Government, various Government Departments, and to other bodies.

The Commonwealth Government has embarked upon a major reorientation of Defence policy, the ADF capabilities and Defence industry policy settings. The RSL believes that the new policy settings could be further strengthened to better enable Australia’s ability to defend itself in any sustained conflict. The RSL advocates that there needs to be greater ambition for Australian Defence industry. Specifically, the creation of one or more Australian Tier 1 national security and advanced manufacturing prime system integrators, Australian Defence Primes. “Our paper contends that the absence of even one Australian Defence Prime has led to poor project outcomes, particularly in the naval sector. It has also resulted in billions of dollars needlessly going offshore at the expense of Australian jobs and national resilience. Unless the creation of Australian Defence Primes is fostered, Australia will likely be in the top five global importers of arms for decades to come.” said RSL National President Greg Melick. The United States is on the verge of a debt crisis that will have severe implications on Australia’s national security and our ability to defend ourselves. As a nation, Australia should be gravely concerned about this crisis, especially considering AUKUS, which tethers us even closer to the US economy. RSL Active was proud to support the 2024 Veteran's Boxing Challenge on 26 October. The event was a sell-out, and the atmosphere was electric. Congratulations to all those who trained for the event and competed. Thank you to the ACT Branch of the Australian Commando Association and Boxing Australia Limited. It was a pleasure to be a part of such an excellent event. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped raise funds for the ACT Branch of the Australian Commando Association to support its work with Special Forces veterans and their families. #RSLActive #AustralianCommandoAssociation #BoxingAustralia #VeteranBoxingChallenge Photos by James Mills

Today, we commemorate Kokoda Day. The day when the Australian flag was raised as Kokoda was recaptured from the Japanese following three months of combat. On this day, we remember the service and sacrifice of all those who played a part in this victory, and we thank the local people who supported our diggers. Known as the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, they guided them, carried them to safety and transported war supplies on their bare shoulders over dense jungle terrain in the most adverse circumstances. Without their support, that flag may never have been raised. #kokodaday #kokodatrack #kokodaPNG #FuzzyWuzzyAngels

Last Thursday, the RSL National Office hosted a visit from the Rabdan Academy from the United Arab Emirates. The visit to Canberra was part of an 8-day visit to Australia to review the National Vocational Education Training (VET) Framework in Australia. The visit also aimed to gain an understanding of how the Australian Defence Force aligns its training programs with the national framework to ensure consistency and quality. The Rabdan Academy is a government-owned world-class education institution that was established to improve the learning outcomes of Defence, Security and Emergency Preparedness, and crisis Management sectors. Pictured is the delegation lead, Colonel Dawood Al Flaiti (Commander, Military Qualification Centre) making a presentation to RSLA CEO Phil Winter.
