Ever found a baby bird outside of it's nest? (This time of year you're more likely to come across this). ✔️ If it seems likely to be injured or in danger from predators, get them to a vet clinic. ✔️ If it is a baby, their parents are probably nearby watching and they will be happy to take it back. 💩 It is a myth that once human scent is on it, or it is on the ground that it can't go back to its own kind, they are always better off with their parents whenever possible. ✔️ If it can't fly, making a nest and putting it high up is the key. The ones that have fluffy feathers, usually can't fly, so need to get off the ground, depending on the species. For more information: https://buff.ly/3UFbbAf

Hooray, it's an update from Eeyore's new owners! After recently adopting him, they told us: "He is settling in well to his new home! At first he was a little scared, but he seemed to become happy once he was fed! Eeyore is a lovely little man who absolutely adores his food and will meow at you from the second you step into the kitchen until when he is fed next. He’s started playing with more toys, and loves his cuddles, and watching magpies out the windows! He is a wonderful cat and he is very welcome and loved in our home!" - new owners. These 'Happily Ever After' updates are the best! Especially that couch potato photo, top left! ❤️

Are you Ready To Go? Being well prepared for emergencies is vital during the ACT’s warmer months. Spring and Summer means an increased likelihood of extreme weather events such as bushfires, floods and hailstorms. To help you prepare, RSPCA ACT wants all residents to take advantage of a free emergency kit and prepare an evacuation plan for your family, including your pets. Download the free digital version here or follow the link and order your Ready To Go kit in the mail: https://lnkd.in/gUyJsx72 Let’s get through extreme weather events together.

Every single animal who arrives at our shelter gets the absolute best attention, care and support until they find a new home. Last week not only did we see lots of adoption, but the variety of animals was spectacular. Instead of naming last weeks adoptee's we thought we'd show you the different pets you can adopt at RSPCA ACT. *If you've adopted from us, please DM us an update with a few pics, it makes it all worthwhile for us. For who's here waiting for adoption, click here: https://buff.ly/3Baejx4

Some cats just need to chill. At RSPCA ACT it's normal for a stray cat to arrive at our shelter and get placed in LTS - Leave To Settle. It's an isolated area where stressed cats or ones not used to people are literally left alone to settle and not be frightened. Then our volunteers, staff and foster carers start the really heavy lifting. These cats can sometimes take months to not only 'settle' but to become accustomed to people and even start to show affection. it takes patience, a few scratches and sometimes a few more scratches, but we never give up on any animal. One such cat was Mr Bonkers - now named Meric. Our cattery staff believed in him from the start. He was certainly a project, hissing at first if we got too close. But persistence and a nice helping of treats won him over; he would eventually allow us to pat him, at least while he ate. In time he was moved into his own larger condo and just lapped up the relative luxury, melting ton his bed and loving it. The latest news is he's been adopted to a loving family with a young boy who fell in love with Meric immediately! From stray street cat to family pet, there's a lot of work involved but it's part of everyday life here at the shelter.

Let's check in on some of those recently adopted animals of ours. Lottie is one girl who truly has landed on her feet after a rough start to life and several stints at our shelter. She's proof of what the right person with the right heart can do for a pet. Her new owner tells us: "Already showing her personality, enjoys playing chase in the backyard with Dyno (our 5 year old kelpie cross healer, also adopted through Weston as a puppy), and she calms down when inside which is great, as they mosey around or soft play. They like having pre-play stand off’s tail’s wagging and Lottie likes to ‘punch’ Dyno to get him to play, it’s incredibly funny. Very great on walks, just weary of other dogs while on lead; someone has spent a lot of time with her as she’s very good on lead. She’s still somewhat nervous around us when standing, but will still approach for quick pats; however She’s very cuddly when you’re sat, eg on the couch she’ll push up and sit on you / next to you." Naaaaaaw. Thank you.

Last Monday the cattery at RSPCA ACT was mostly empty, it was quite surreal and an unusual experience for our cattery staff and volunteers. Thanks to everyone who helped with our 'Clear the Shelter' adoption blitz. However...it's already filling up fast with some of the many cats in our care being declared ready for adoption! We've also utilised the (view) brief respite to contact some of the animal owners on our surrender waiting list. With kitten season gathering momentum, we'll have lots of cats and kittens available in the coming days, weeks and months. Drop by anytime between Mon-Sat 10am-3pm of for specific information call: 02 62878100
