Landscape architecture, urban design and constructed ecology

About us

“Landscape is really the stuff of life itself, the great theatre of the living spirit, the basis of collective endeavour, the territory of public space, the ecology of new world environments. This is the foundation of our technique and the reality of landscape architecture.” Catherine Rush and Michael Wright, 2001 rush\wright associates is an award winning design practice based in Melbourne, Australia, offering consultancy services in landscape architecture, urban design and constructed ecology. {2024 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) VIC LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AWARD - GARDENS} Sand Garden, Racecourse Hill Glenluce “Built by landscape architects, the Sand Garden at Glenluce showcases our profession's understanding of modern, drought-proof, and fire-resistant landscapes. The Sand Garden employs thoughtful use of local soils, railway ballast, and river sand to create a positively charged and resilient space. Beneath the sand, stone-filled trenches retain water for extended periods, fortifying the landscape for its climate of extremes. Serving as a testing ground, these innovative discoveries prove key to the project’s establishment and success amidst a changing climate.” Country: Dja Dja Wurrung Photographer Attribution: Michael Wright Catherine Rush #ailavicawards2024 #gardens #landscapearchitectureawards #awardwinner #congratulations #sand #garden  #littlegarden  #landscapearchitecture  #australia  #melbourne

Miscarriage Memorial – Bunurong Memorial Park - work in progress The new Miscarriage Memorial will be reviewed this weekend as part of the Melbourne Design Week: DESIGN + DEATH | TIME IMMEMORIAL presented by Open House Melbourne. https://lnkd.in/gBJRae3U RWA has been working with Katherine Rekaris landscape architect, lead designer, on the design of this small but significant project. The Memorial Project designed for the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust incorporates feedback from community members who were directly affected by miscarriage and stillbirth as well as health professionals working in consultation with grieving families. The design process explored how to create an intimate healing experience within limited spatial constraints and with a strong focus on planted diversity and natural form. The space holds visitors within planted low-lying mounds with changing patterns of flowering plants. A spiral path entry creates an unfolding experience of terrain in an otherwise flat landscape. The design offers a place of healing, reflection and connection, with subtle elements that contribute to recovery from trauma. Thanks again to Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) and Open House Melbourne and to Paul Thompson for planting conversations. Open early 2025. Miscarriage Memorial – Bunurong Memorial Park The new Miscarriage Memorial will be reviewed this weekend as part of the Melbourne Design Week: DESIGN + DEATH | TIME IMMEMORIAL presented by Open House Melbourne. https://lnkd.in/gBJRae3U RWA has been working with Katherine Rekaris on the design of this small but significant project. The trauma suffered by those affected by miscarriage and stillbirth is a new space in which memorialisation is evolving. This Memorial Project incorporates feedback from community members who were directly affected by miscarriage and stillbirth and also health professionals working in consultation with grieving families. The design process explores how to create an intimate healing experience within limited spatial constraints and with a strong focus on planted diversity and natural form. The space holds visitors within its low-lying mounds. The floriferous interior symbolises the beauty and intimacy of the experience of pregnancy with changing patterns of flowering plants. Weeping tree species contribute to the calmness of the space; she-oaks are a tree known to be a marker of safety for Bunurong children. This design offers a place of healing, reflection and connection, with subtle elements that contribute to recovery from trauma. Shown here are some WIP sketches/modelling materials from the design process. Thanks again to Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) and Open House Melbourne and to Paul Thompson for planting conversations. The Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre (PFMCC) is the product of Alfred Health’s desire for a singular, highly visible centre for melanoma cancer treatment and research and the creation of a building focused on a patient-centred experience. Completed earlier this year, the building is a translational research facility, representing a global centre of excellence with regard to developing the latest therapies and clinical trial offerings. The architectural brief was to create a building ‘not like a hospital’, a centre that assists patients on their journey to recovery. The iconic external design, based on the idea of the healthy outer layer of skin, allows light to filter softly through the ‘veil’ of the façade, creating a calming environment for patients and staff. Equally important in our design was the creation of therapy and treatment spaces that support patient and visitor wellbeing. A ground plane of gardens and retreat areas create a supportive, calming experience. Treatment chairs are grouped in ‘pods’ to ensure premium individual care while achieving a sense of community essential for returning therapy patients. The upper floors concentrate on research laboratories and workplace environments for staff, researchers and clinicians, with all floors allowing space for future flexibility and growth.
