New Zealand is showing Australia the way forward by launching a national tyre recycling scheme offering free collections of end of life tyres from this week. Australia produced 225,000 tonnes of end of life tyres in 2022-23 but has no national recycling scheme, resulting in stockpiles that release toxic gases and chemicals, as well as providing breeding grounds for pests such as mosquitos.
