🚢 DNV Crane Inspection at AMC, Henderson WA 🚢 Safe Lifting Australia recently completed an important scope of work at the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) in Henderson, WA. Our team performed a detailed inspection and maintenance on a cargo loading knuckle boom crane, ensuring it operates safely and reliably for offshore use. 🔧 What did the job involve? A comprehensive visual inspection and precise measurement of bolts to ensure they met strict standards. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) of slew ring bolts, conducted in full compliance with DNV requirements. Tensioning of all bolts after reinstalment, an essential step to ensure structural integrity and differentiate from simple torque tightening. 🛠️ What is DNV? DNV (Det Norske Veritas) is a globally recognized maritime classification body specializing in quality and safety in the maritime and energy sectors. Their rigorous guidelines ensure that equipment, like cranes used in offshore environments, meet the highest safety and performance standards. Our experienced team members hold certifications in DNV and API (American Petroleum Institute) standards, enabling us to consult, inspect, and perform a wide range of offshore crane and lifting work scopes. At Safe Lifting Australia, we pride ourselves on maintaining industry-leading safety standards and providing expert solutions for the marine, offshore, and onshore lifting sectors. Understanding Wire Rope Discard Criteria: A Closer Look at AS2759 Standards At Safe Lifting Australia, ensuring the safety and compliance of lifting operations is paramount. One critical aspect often overlooked is the condition of wire ropes used in lifting and rigging applications. According to Australian Standard AS2759, wire ropes must be discarded and replaced to prevent accidents when they show signs of significant wear, deformation, or damage. 🔍 Key Discard Criteria Include: Wear: Reduction in diameter from the original size due to material loss. If the rope's diameter has diminished to 95% or less of its nominal diameter, it should be immediately discarded. Deformation: Changes in the shape of the rope or individual wires, including waves or kinks that could compromise rope integrity. Wire Breakage: Specific limits are set on the number of visible broken wires allowable. For instance, a 6x36 wire rope configuration allows for up to 7 wire breaks over a length equal to 6 times the rope's diameter and up to 14 breaks across 30 times the rope’s diameter. 📉 Internal and External Wear: Wear occurs both internally and externally and can be significantly reduced by proper lubrication and preventing the accumulation of dust and grit. Regular maintenance is crucial to extend the lifespan of wire ropes. 🚫 Immediate Discard Conditions: Other critical issues requiring immediate rope discard include core dislodgement and birdcaging, as these can severely affect the rope’s performance and safety. 🔗 Example Case: Consider a 6x36 wire rope—widely used for its balance between flexibility and abrasion resistance. Even with robust construction, regular inspection is crucial to detect the early signs of wire breaks or wear as specified by AS2759. 👷 Stay Safe and Compliant: It's essential to regularly inspect your crane ropes and other lifting equipment. For detailed inspections, compliance checks, or more information on maintaining your equipment within industry standards, contact Safe Lifting Australia at www.safelifting.com.au. 📞 Need an Expert Inspection?
