Safe System Snippet: Bridge barrier containment levels This heart stopping video was doing the rounds recently due to the close call for the truck driver. But is anyone else questioning the lack of any barrier system with a decent containment level? In Australia, bridge barrier containment levels are defined by the standards set in AS 5100.2:2022 Bridge Design – Part 2: Design Loads. These containment levels specify the type and size of vehicles that a bridge barrier must be able to withstand upon impact, ensuring the safety of vehicle occupants and the integrity of the structure. ———— Sign up to our mailing list for more snippets and news: https://lnkd.in/gXsAeAa9 #SafeSystemSnippet #TrafficSafety #RoadSafety

I've been involved in motorcycle safety infrastructure for the past 20 years, and we've struggled to find an effective solution for motorcyclists who go over barriers in crashes. Nearly half of motorcyclists who collide with barrier systems end up going over the top. In high-risk situations, like freeway overpasses on curves or cliffs, we've been searching for something that could make a difference. On my recent trip to the US, I was intrigued by the Net Containment System recently tested in Texas and now approved by the Texas Department of Transportation for bridge structures. Developed and tested by Texas A&M, this system shows promise. What are others' thought on this type of system? Where do you think we could trial this in Australia or New Zealand? #motorcyclesafety #roadsafety #trafficsafety Photo sources: Texas A&M, Fox19. Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd

If you are interested in how to undertake Crash Investigations in a Safe System context, I am running an online course together with Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd starting Sept 17. Open for anyone to join. Course details and registration here: https://lnkd.in/d9vmCqG8
Safe System Snippet: Dynamic visual obstruction Dynamic visual obstruction is the term for when a moving vehicle blocks another vehicle’s sightlines. Motorcyclists are highly susceptible to dynamic visual obstruction crashes due to their small size and their propensity to be masked by other vehicles on the road network. There are a raft of ways to reduce dynamic visual obstruction risk at intersections, including: - Altering the intersection form (e.g. roundabout or raised intersection) - Fully controlling turns - Slowing vehicles on the approach to the intersection - Altering lane configuration and layout - Improving surface skid resistance --------- Sign up to our mailing list for more snippets and news: https://lnkd.in/gXsAeAa9 #roadsafety #trafficsafety #motorcyclesafety #safesystem #SafeSystemSnippet
Safe System Snippet: Speed cushions While buses and larger vehicles can easily navigate over raised platforms, raised crossings or speed humps, the ramp grades sometimes need adjusting on routes with frequent bus traffic. However, in areas with pedestrian activity, we shouldn’t compromise the speed reduction of cars to make traffic calming smoother for buses. So, what’s the solution? Speed cushions – they effectively slow down cars while allowing larger vehicles to straddle them, ensuring safety for all road users. ———— Sign up to our mailing list for more snippets and news: https://lnkd.in/gXsAeAa9 #SafeSystemSnippet #TrafficSafety #RoadSafety

Ready to roll with our 3-day road safety barriers course here in Melbourne. I love running this course with our Technical Lead, Jamie Robertson, and guest presenters Evan Coulson, Philip Rosser and Alex Verstage. We pack so much in, including: 👉 Road safety barrier design fundamentals 👉 Hazard identification 👉 Design philosophy and the Safe System 👉 Barrier systems overview 👉 Barrier performance requirements 👉 Crash testing 👉 Accepted barrier products and process 👉 Motorcyclist considerations 👉 Network Roadside Risk Intervention Threshold (NRRIT) 👉 End terminals 👉 Transitions 👉 Common design challenges 👉 Installation and maintenance issues 👉 Damage assessment and repair procedures … and a whole lot more. We also get on site and do a barrier design exercise which is always a highlight. #barrierssavelives
Safe System Snippet - Path-to-Path Intersection Design Here are some key practices to keep in mind when designing intersections where two paths meet: 1. Clear Priorities: Establish clear priorities for path users. Consider the volume of users, and if it's low, give priority to the stream most inconvenienced by stopping. 2. Visibility is Key: Maintain good sight lines for all users. A clear view enhances safety and minimizes potential conflicts. 3. Advance Warning: Provide advance warning for approaching intersections. Early notification helps users adjust their speed and navigate the intersection safely. 4. Signage Matters: Follow sign guidance diligently. Proper signage is important for effective communication and ensuring everyone understands the rules of the path. 5. 90-Degree Intersections: Where possible, have intersections at 90-degrees. 6. Treatments for Smooth Flow: Treat path intersections like local road intersections. Implement line markings and signage where appropriate for clarity and to organise path user flow. -------------- Sign up to our mailing list for more snippets and news: https://lnkd.in/gXsAeAa9 #SafeSystemSnippet #TrafficSafety #RoadSafety #BikePathDesign #FootpathDesign
