Today I announced my resignation as CEO of the National Farmers' Federation to take up the role of Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner – an independent role appointed by the Australian Government, reporting to the Minister for Climate and Energy. I have been totally blessed to work in a job I have absolutely loved for the last 10 years. Theres no doubt its been tough, at times frustrating and challenging journey and it is forever pretty hectic tyring to get good policy agreed to and implemented. Ag advocacy is not for the feint hearted. For sure there are some days id like to have over and some things have not gone my way, but its I job that has taken me to places and provided me with experiences that I will both never forget and never thought id get. Ive learnt and grown every single day and Im grateful for all of the experiences - good and not so good. I have from the day I was appointed as NFF CEO, considered myself incredibly lucky to have worked in such an organisation and role, and Ill miss it dearly. I have been so fortunate to work with some amazing and talented people both within the NFF Team and ag supply chain network and for this im incredibly grateful - theyve made what is a challenging role worth doing. Aust Ag is the most amazing industry and we have so much to be proud of and enthusiastic about. Of course there are challenges, but by continuing to work collaboratively and positively and by bringing people together, the industry can achieve great things. It’s a hard decision to leave but I need to continue to take opportunities to grow and take on new challenges. I also need to provide an opportunity for the organisation to grow and refresh and give someone else a chance to put their mark on the NFF. Thanks to all that have helped make my time at NFF so enjoyable and rewarding. While the government promised a $107 million package, not a single support measure has been delivered. The promised 'Transition Advocate' has still not been appointed, and neither have any of the mental health support services been implemented. Sheep Producers Australia is continuing to raise these issues with the government including pathways to a more equitable funding package, which is currently woefully inadequate to grow onshore processing and increase the value of production. “We are engaging in good faith to try to achieve a better outcome for our producers, but it’s hard to see how this can happen when the government refuses to acknowledge the reality of the situation on the ground,” Bonnie Skinner CEO Sheep Producers Australia. “We said early on that a funding package of at least three times what has been announced would be the minimum required to support a least harm implementation pathway for the sheep industry to try to adapt in less than four years.” Ms Skinner stated. As uncertainty grows and government inaction continues, the industry demands that the government be held accountable for the harm caused by this policy. "Government must be held to account for its role when bad policy affects good people and communities. Sheep producers face the same cost of living pressures as everyone else, but their income has gone AWOL. The government is making our sheep producers pay for the damage caused by this poorly thought-out policy."
